The real story is never revealed.
Notice that neither Jon or Garfield turned off the stove the moment the yogurt overflows.
A book is indeed flammable, which means it could caught fire if near heat. However, when the Jon had was place on the stove while cooking, it didn't catch on fire. The only disaster was an overflowing yogurt.
When Garfield is telling his side of the story, at the beginning when Jon is driving the car, if you look closely at it, you can see that the front of the car makes an angry face!
Why would anyone make there own yogert?
Garfield: What luck. Jon finally gets a decent quantity of food in the house and it had to be yogurt.
In Jon's side of the story, Garfield is shown to be very mean since he's the villain in Jon's story. The same occurs in Garfield with Jon as the villain.
