It all starts out in a castle in 994 england being attacked by vickings. They are turned to stone by the magician who feels they betryaed the people there. They are turned to stone untell the castle rises above the clouds. The gargoyles reawaken 1000 years later when Xanetose buys the castle and places it ontop of his skycraper ( which comes up above the clouds, thus ending the curse). They awaken in Manhattan in 1994 where they meet a police dective named Eliza Maza. This is where it all began...

This is one of my favorite cartoons EVER, they have never made another one like it before or sense. Its exciting and dramatic somewhat dark in place and totally unique. Its the best, i have seen Every single episode ( probably at least 3 times).moreless
  • Pure unbelievable magic!

This is it, the episode that started it all in Disney's greatest cartoon ever!
With a beautiful opening in both 994 Scotland and 1994 Manhattan, along with ongoing examples of how the show pushed the bar and was so great, proved that the opener of this magnificent five part series opener is perhaps the best in TV history. Beautiful animation (I dare you to name a show whose animation is better), nice action, superb dialogue and a great introduction to the characters. They let you know just enough about them and move slightly along so the surprises you're hit with later as the show progresses really keep you hooked to this show. The massacre (you don't get that from Disney very much) and even the blood shot were excellently done and the episode did a great job of setting everything up for the next episode(s).moreless

    • Tom I'm Tom! What's your name? Lexington: Except for Goliath, we don't have names. Tom: How do you tell each other apart? Lexington: Well, we look different. Tom: But what do you call each other? Brooklyn: Friend.

    • Brooklyn: Sent to the rookery. How embarrassing. Broadway: I haven't been down here since I hatched. Lexington: I hope we're not down here long. He might eat us.

    • Goliath: (to Demona) I won't go alone. Remember, you and I are one, now and forever.

    • Captain of the Guard: Goliath, we owe you our lives. Goliath: As we owe you ours every day.

    • Hakon's Soldier: Attacking a castle full of gargoyles near nightfall. This is crazy, and Hakon knows it. Hakon: No, my friend. That's not crazy. Questioning my sanity when I'm in earshot. That's crazy.

    • Star Trek Voice Actors: Many characters on the show are voiced by actors who stared on the various Star Trek series. These include Jonathan Frakes (Xanatos) and Marina Sirtis (Demona), who played William Riker and Deanna Troi respectively in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Frank Welker, and Clancy Brown have played guest roles in Star Trek.

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • Hooded rider: You seek the fall of Castle Wyvern. A wyvern is a winged, reptilian creature that was popular on medieval heraldry. Wyverns were like dragons, but they stood on two legs instead of four, making them visually similar to the gargoyles.

    • Princess Katharine: In the future, Captain, you will make your reports to my advisor, the Magus, not directly to me! Magus is named after a book of magic spells and ceremonial magic, which includes knowledge of alchemy, astrology, and the kabbalah.
