Episode Summary

Begin The Defense Of The Earth
Shun Ukiya is a high school student who lives with his mother and younger sister Saemi. Shun and Saemi quarrel over the TV, as Shun wants to watch cartoons while Saemi wants to watch the news. Their mother starts crying that the two fight. She asks Shun to say good-bye to his father's picture as he gets ready to head off to school. He refuses, and his mother starts lecturing him on how he was a hard birth and his father went to the Temple to pray while she was in labor. At school, Shun loses in a Kendo match. His teacher asks if he'd like to try out for the team. He could possibly win a scholarship and take some of the burden off his mother. Shun says he'd rather get a part-time job. Besides, all the heroes in sports mangas come from poor families. On his way home, Shun runs into the battle between AEGIS and the aliens. Ruriko Ikusawa, of the Gate Keeper team, is apparently the only one of the AEGIS group with Gate Keeper powers. She is dressed in a sailor suit and shoots arrows with her bow. They are fighting a large, black iron ball filled with aliens with a red alien in the center. Shun gets mad and throws a can at it, which knocks off a quarter of the ball. The Invaders then change targets and attack Shun. He is hit and goes down. Ririko has the ability to heal and gives him the rest of her strength. He gets up and it's the red ball with his Kendo strike to defeat it. Thus he learns of AEGIS, and the Gate Keeper, Ruriko, whom he recognizes from kindergarten as runny-nosed Rurippe.moreless
