Episode Summary

Concerning the Existence of an Expository Requirement under Special Non-socia...
In episode 9, Madarame comes to the Genshiken room after buying some ero magazines only to find out that Saki is the only person in the room. At first he is weirded out with the situation since this is the first time the two are alone in the room. However, he remembers that it's been a year since she's been with Genshiken so he makes an attempt to converse with her. He asks Saki if she watched yesterday's Kujibiki Unbalance and surprisingly she did, although she thinks there's nothing special about it. So Madarame ends up pointing out what a masterpiece the episode is and manages to make Saki agrees with him. Well, it turns out the whole thing turns out to be his imagination since in reality, Saki remains quiet while reading manga. Madarame then tries to find something he can talk about like the manga that Saki reads or talking about the Kujibiki on TV. However, she remains unresponsive and very different from the Saki in Madarame's imagination.moreless

  • A very special episode for Madarame and Saki

This very odd episode is one that should ONLY ever be seen by people already familiar with the show.

In the episode, arch rivals Saki and Madarame find themselves alone together in the Genshiken room.

Saki seems to have taken a real interest in Manga and is alone reading a book, when Madarame walks in with a backpack filled with erotic comic books.

For most of the episode Saki is more or less speechless while we enter the mind of Madarame as he wonders what on earth he should do when faced with being alone in a room with a girl.

It is at times a very humorous look into the mind of someone whose primary experience with girls is through dating video games.

But it is also an insightful look into Madarame's character. It is the first episode in which we start seeing a real sympathetic side to his character. There is even an interesting flashback into his life in high school that almost acts as a Madarame "origin story."

One could easily write this episode off as a budget saving episode. It only featured two actors and all the action took place in the Genshiken room. However, I think the epsisode is quite an important one as it allows a chance for both Saki and Madarame's characters to become more fully fleshed out.

So, while it isn't the most enjoyable episode to date, it is certainly one of the more interesting.moreless
