Episode Summary

EDIT
Study of the Modern Visually-Oriented Culture
AIRED:
The episode begins by showing a little girl crying and dragging her teddy bear while she walks along a deserted road. She eventually gets to meet a boy who tries to calm her by holding her hand. She seems to be grateful for this but she ends up crying even more because of it. Cut to an opening which turns out to be Kujibiki Unbalance opening.

After the opening is finished, the show continues by showing Enomoto Chihiro, Kujibiki main character telling his sister that it's time for breakfast. Then there is pan out of the scene to reveal that the entire thing was a TV show that is being watched by Sasahara, Genshiken main character. From here on, Genshiken begins without any opening title. We get to see Sasahara switches the TV off then proceeds to go to his campus. Apparently there's a clubs fair happening and he wants to join either a manga or anime group. In the same area, a blonde-haired girl, Kasukabe Saki, is seen trying to fend off an unwanted attraction from a guy.

Saki coldly tells the guy to get lost fast. Her icy demeanour leaves the guy with no choice but to hang his head in shame and disappear from her sight. While Saki enjoys her victory, she notices a guy walking by with a Walkman. She seems to be quite attracted to the guy and much to her surprise, the guy turns out to be a childhood friend of hers, Kousaka Makoto.

Elsewhere, Sasahara eventually manages to gather his nerve together and decides to ask for some information from a club. However, before he manages to do that, Kousaka already engaged in a conversation with the club members. Discouraged by this new turn of event, Sasahara decides to go away again. In the end, Sasahara, becomes mildly intrigued with a small, seemingly unpopular group called 'Genshiken'. A few days later, Sasahara is seen walking along a quiet hallway in his campus. He eventually stops in front of a dilapidated-looking door that belongs to Genshiken HQ. While Sasahara decides whether or not he should come inside, Kousaka appears out of nowhere and greets him. Kousaka wonders if Sasahara is a senior student but it seems just like Kousaka, Sasahara is a first year student. Kousaka then asks Sasahara if he's also a Genshiken member but Sasahara tells Kousaka that he's simply there to take a look. Because of this, Kousaka decides to invite Sasahara to come and check out the HQ

Upon getting in, Sasahara gets to listen as various members of the group are talking about Kujibiki Unbalance. Kousaka asks Sasahara if he also watches the show but Sasahara pretends as if he doesn't watch it. After a while, one of the group members, Madarame, decides to get out of the room to go to a bathroom. Not long after this, the other members seem to get a phone call, which let them know that they have other business to attend to. So one by one they leave the room until only Kousaka and Sasahara are inside. Not long after this, however, Kousaka also gets a phone call and it seems Saki wants to see him so he also excuses himself out of the room. Realising that he's now all alone in the room, Sasahara uses the opportunity to check out the nifty items in the room including the porn doujinshi. Unfortunately for him the whole thing turns out to be a trap.

It turns out everyone got out of the room so that they can caught him 'reading' the porn doujinshi in the room. Because of this Madarame asks Sasahara if he'll join them now. Before he can continue, however, Saki appears in the room. Sasahara is surprised to see her and asks if she's also a member of Genshiken. He promptly receives a punch in the face. Saki asks him if she looks like a member of Genshiken. Anyway, a couple of days later, as Sasahara goes to the cafeteria, he spots one of the Genshiken members walking on the opposite direction. He, however, pretends not to notice the guy. When he's about to have lunch, however, Kousaka appears and join him in the table. Kousaka wonders why Sasahara still hasn't join Genshiken. Sasahara thinks that he doesn't fit in with the group. Kousaka, however, thinks that Sasahara fits in nicely with the group. Upon hearing this, Sasahara wonders why Kousaka joins the group especially since he looks cool and has a girlfriend.

Kousaka, however, tells him that Saki is actually not his girlfriend. She just hangs around him a lot. He does admit that he wonders if Saki likes him sometimes. Speaking of the devil, Saki is seen shopping in the city and complaining to another woman how the guy he's interested in is an otaku. Meanwhile, Kousaka decides to invite Sasahara back to his home to play some video games. Not long after this, the other Genshiken members also arrive to bring them some bento boxes. Just as the guys are enjoying their time together, however, Kousaka gets a phone call from Saki who wants to come to his house. Kousaka invites him to come so she can play video games with other guys from Genshiken. Sasahara, however, realises that Saki only wants to spend time alone with Kousaka and therefore he decides to tell her that he and the other guys are going to leave soon so she should come right away. In the end, Saki gets to have Kousaka's attention all to herself. Well, sort of, because Kousaka seems to give more attention to his video game than to Saki and her non-existant clothes.moreless
