"The Tempest" is as little suited to being condensed into an hour and a quarter's television as most Shakespeare plays, and George Schaefer's production of this most magical of entertainments is, as usual, solid and straightforward and no-nonsense - but what is really needed is a series of imaginative leaps. Maurice Evans plays Prospero in his customary between-the-wars Old Vic manner - perfectly all right, but a world away from, say, John Gielgud's beautiful performance in the movie "Prospero's Books". Evans is actually billed above Richard Burton, who is imaginatively cast as Caliban and gives a fine, dangerous performance, very different from Evans's standardised elocutions. Lee Remick is a really charming Miranda, and Roddy McDowall was born to play Ariel. Broadway designer Rouben Ter-Arutunian provides the eye-taking sets.moreless
