  • An episode that shows how important Don Adams was to "Get Smart" - it sinks because he is not around.

Agent 99 must team up with a CIA special agent in the frozen north.

This is one of those episodes that reminds you of how important the characters are to setting up the comedy of the series. The rather contrived set-up shows 99 talking on the phone to Max in the beginning, but in reality, these scenes were added later in order to add a trace of continuity.

The program itself teams 99 with CIA agent Quigley in an attempt to foil a plot to plunge the world into a new ice age. Along the way, Siegfried is revealed to be interested in the same nefarious gambit, ultimately a plan by a mad scientist to unleash a huge fan into the arctic to blow cold across the globe. After a lot of soundstage scenes of igloos, the plot is eventually foiled - but without a lot of comedy.

The biggest problem with this installment is not the story itself (supposedly causing Don Adams to walk out and boycott the episode) but the fact that Quigley (Bill Dana) cannot deliver lines that were written for Agent 86. In some ways it's instructive that the series was mainly a set of well-written and well-ordered Don Adams "catch phrases" - but in others it's also an example of how much Adams carried the series. This episode shows that the formula could be tenuous, as it really doesn't generate many laughs.
