The character of Hans Hunter seems to be based on a character named General Zaroff from the short story The Most Dangerous Game, written by Richard Connell in 1924. In the story, Zaroff is a Cossack nobleman, and at one time in the army, is a big game hunter who feel his skills can only truly be put to the test by hunting human prey. Incidentally, the character Hans Hunter was a former Nazi, communist, and member of the mafia.
