Zak says that Lizzie is suspected of killing her own mother, and that it may have been caused by demonic possession. What he fails to make clear is that Abby Borden was Lizzie's stepmother, and that Lizzie and her sister Emma were furious with both her and their father over some financial decisions he'd recently made. These included giving a house to some relatives of their stepmother. There was a serious argument about money shortly before the murders, leading both Lizzie and Emma to leave home on "vacations", though both returned before the murders took place.

Another interesting fact is that Mr Borden used an axe to chop off the heads of some pigeons Lizzie was keeping in the derelict family barn because he claimed they caused some of the neighborhood boys to trespass on the property, where they might get hurt or start a fire.
