Episode Summary

Togusa, at the request of Chief Aramaki, returns to work. Both head out to the Prime Minister's residence with a detailed report citing Secretary-General Yakushima as the real power behind the Laughing Man Incident. However, before they can even leave their own building, they are told by the Minister of Home Affairs that Public Security has already been accused of being the masterminds behind the Laughing Man. The situation has gone from bad to worse and it will take a concerted effort by all of its members for Section 9 to clear itself of the charges.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (0)

  • QUOTES (1)

    • Aramaki: Major, it's me.
Motoko: Did you manage to persuade the Prime Minister?
Aramaki: Assemble everyone at the Section 9 building right away.
      Motoko: Any...other orders?
Aramaki: Don't die. Survive, no matter what.

  • NOTES (5)

    • Japanese Title: 「孤城落日」 - 「Kojō Rakujitsu」

The DVD translates the title as 「Stand Alone」 although it literally translates to 「Isolated Castle Setting Sun」

    • Original Japanese Airdate: March 11th, 2003.

    • The news report at the beginning of the episode reveals that Section 9 is under the auspices of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

    • The elite Naval force that attacks Section 9 is called the Umibōzu. Written in Japanese as 海坊主, this super-secret assault force, under the auspices of the JMSDA (Japanese Maritime Self Defense Army), lives up to their name: The Monsters of the Sea.

    • Batou mentions that the Umibōzu was the unit that, "took part in the op to take back Nemuro." Nemuro is a city, and peninsula, on the northeastern side of the northern island of Hokkaidō. It is also next to the four islands that the Japanese, and this series, call the Northern Territories (as mentioned in episode 19 - "CAPTIVATED").

    • Breaking News: "BRAIN DRAIN"

The Home Affairs Minster's call to Aramaki, and the news broadcast which highlights the secret activities of Section 9 is a reference to the outing of Motoko and Section 9 in chapter 10, "BRAIN DRAIN", from the 1991 Ghost in the Shell manga by Shirō Masamune.
