Episode Summary

EDIT
The Laughing Man returns and, just as he did six years ago, kidnaps the President of Serano Genomics without being detected. Section 9 arrives too late and sets out to find him. Meanwhile, the Laughing Man and Mr. Serano discuss what happened six years ago. The stakes are much higher this time, and for the Laughing Man failure is not an option.moreless

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • Episode Goof:

In the car ride, the driver looks back at Serano when he says, "It's just like last time, isn't it?" The view shown is reversed from what the driver would see in the mirror. Serano should be on the right of the screen and the vehicle should be in the left lane instead of the right as it is shown in the mirror.

    • QUOTES (4)

      • Serano: Ever since I saw the news about the Sunflower Society and Imakurusu, I resigned myself to the fact that you'd probably come here next.
Laughing Man: I'm here to see to it that you make good on the promise you made six years ago.

      • Aramaki: We contacted you earlier. We're Public Security Section 9. I was told that Mr. Serano had already gone. Is that true?
Police Officer: Yes, his usual ride to the office already left. Same as always. What about it?
Batou: (condescendingly) Look at your watch. Is that the usual time he leaves?...Gee-whiz, your boss sure is one hell of a hard worker, ain't he?

      • Serano: Compared to back then, you've changed too. You've lost your naïveté.
The Laughing Man: I guess I have managed to mature a little. I'll confess that in those days, I wanted so bad to give all the phonies in the world a solid, swift kick in the ass.

      • Serano: A word of wisdom for you: The evil that lurks in this world exists on a level that's far greater than we could ever envision.

    • NOTES (5)

      • Japanese Title: 「善悪の彼岸」 - 「Zenaku no Higan」

The DVD translates the title as 「Beyond Good and Evil」

      • Original Japanese Airdate: March 4th, 2003.

      • Bōma says that Secretary-General Kaoru Yakushima switched control of cyberbrain technology from METI to the Ministry of Health.

METI stands for Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

      • The security detail that had been guarding Ernest Serano carry indentification that they are part of Section 1, which is the Ministry of Home Affairs. The badge that Batou uses to put the security guard's ID into the computer has the Japanese kanji 第1課 on it. It says Dai'ichi-ka or Section #1.

      • The song that plays when the Laughing Man points his S&W Chief Special at Mr. Serano is called "To Tell the Truth".
