Episode Summary

EDIT
A highway accident involving a large commercial truck has left a fully prostheticized man dead, his body torn apart from the impact. Togusa is summoned by Aramaki to delve deeper into the matter as the dead man had recently tried to blackmail the Energy Ministry. The dead man's name was Kanji Kotan and he had recently arrived to Niihama by way of Tōkyō. Due to the rest of Section 9 guarding the Prime Minister ("INDUCTANCE"), Aramaki can only send Togusa, with a Tachikoma as protection, to dig up what he can about the man's recent activities before he died.moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (2)

      • Strange Dub

Usually when saying a Japanese name, the English voice artists will put the given name first and then the family name. In the case of Kanji Kotan, however, they actually say his family name first (Kotan) and his given name last (Kanji). The subtitles on the DVD put his name as Kanji Kotan.

      • Animation Error

When Togusa ends his call with the Chief, and the doors begin to close on the train, he drops his hand down to his side. The animators made a mistake in movement as, for a split second, Togusa has two right hands and forearms.

    • QUOTES (0)

    • NOTES (5)

      • Japanese Title: 「潜在熱源」 - 「Senzai Netsugen」

      • Original Japanese Airdate: March 6th, 2004.

      • Kanji on Side of Truck: (株) 黒松電設 - (Kabu) Kuromatsu Densatsu - Kuromatsu Electric (Incorporated). Kuromatsu means "Black Pine" in Japanese.

      • When Togusa and Ruriko enter the huge factory deep underground, there is some kanji written on one of the walls: 大日本技研. In Romaji it says Dai-Nihon Giken. In English it says Greater Japan Technical Research Institute (the word 'Institute' is not in the English dub). This company will be mentioned again in "FAKE FOOD".

      • The sign that Togusa steps on, then looks at his watch to discover that the factory is contaminated with radiation, says, "Entry beyond this point prohibited. Wear radiation suits and film badges. Tōkyō Nuclear Power Plant." The film badge is the black on red square that Kanji Kotan had given his friend to warn him of high radiation.

    • ALLUSIONS (3)

      • "That last one was the Holy Grail."

The Tachikoma's statement as it disconnects from the cyberbrain at the Akihabara shop is a reference to the Tachikoma's adventure in "ESCAPE FROM" where it found the cyberbrain that contained the ghost of a movie director.

      • Togusa on a String: "PHANTOM FUND"

The Tachikoma losing Togusa is a reference to the chapter "PHANTOM FUND" from the 1991 Ghost in the Shell manga by Masamune Shirow. In the chapter, the Fuchikoma loses track of Motoko despite her ordering the Fuchikoma to stay close to her.

      • Submerged Building: Tōkyō City Hall

The large submerged building, with its massive towers that are sending smoke into the night sky, is actually Tower 1 of Tōkyō's City Hall. Located in West Shinjuku, 西新宿 or Nishi Shinjuku, of the Shinjuku Ward, 新宿区 or Shinjuku-ku, of Tōkyō, it is the tallest building and the second tallest structure (the tallest is the Tōkyō Tower) in theTōkyō skyline. Pictures of the City Hall Tower can be found here.
