I just started watching the show so I'm just curious if the show discusses this: Does the show discuss how the Major(the one with the purple hair) get her cyborg body?

The series does talk a little about the Major first becoming prostheticized. Episode 3, "ANDROID AND I", episode 8, "MISSING HEARTS", and the final three episodes of 1st GIG do discuss a bit about the Major's past with her cyborg body.

To some extent, I think that "NIGHT CRUISE" also reveals a bit about how Motoko received such an incredibly strong cybernetic body. Even though they never say, I think that the discussion of the last two world wars tells us that Motoko fought in some conflict in which her body was upgraded for her valour in combat.

It doesn't go into much details in the first Gig but you really understand how Major gets it in the 2nd gig series. There will be an episode in which it will talk about her childhood with another boy. Its truely sad but I wont spoil it

Is that the one with the origami? I didn't watch it all, but I didn't think that was her. The girl recipient was one of the first full body prothetics.

Then again, I didn't see it all.

Yes, the origami episode (affection) does shine light into Motoko's past and her experience which led to her full cyberization.

there are some hints in the 1st GiG but as has been said the explantion of when she actually became a fullbody cyborg is in 2nd GIG.

As to how she got her current body i think alot of that came from her being a member of Section 9 and having acess to all sorts of high end combat cybernetics because of it.
