The camera opens on a pair of Grateful Dead back stage passes that are sitting in the window of Melinda's shop. Meanwhile you can here Melinda talking on the phone in the background. As she is agreeing to go to a movie with Jim, Melinda watches a young boy roll into the store wearing wheelies. She watches him go to the back of the store and then head for the door. Melinda quickly ends her phone call and grabs the boy before he leaves the store. "First, no skates in the storeā¦.And no shoplifting" Melinda then pulls the Grateful Dead tickets from his pocket. The boy insists that he was planning on paying for them, but she informs him that they cost $275 each and he was heading in the wrong direction to pay. She then goes to the phone and asks for his phone number. When he refuses to give it to her, she gives him two options; either she calls his parents or she will take him to the police station. Finally he tells her his name is Ned and gives Melinda his mother's number.
The scene changes to Ned's mother Delia, apologizing to Melinda for her son's actions. Delia promises that he has never done anything like that before and that he will never be in her store again. Melinda insists that it is not necessary to ban him from the store, only next time he should be wearing shoes without wheels. After a little small talk Delia tells Melinda that he has been acting strange lately and she does not know why. Delia and Melinda say their goodbyes and Delia leaves with Ned.
Melinda is driving down a dark road alone at night. As she is driving she is singing along with the radio and all of a sudden she hits something. Shocked, she pulls over and gets out to see what she has hit. When she gets to the front of the car it does not look like she has hit anything and there is nothing in the road. Melinda hurries back to the car and drives off. As she is speeding down the road, a man's hands appear on her hood as if he is trying to climb up from under her car. Frightened and screaming, Melinda swerves off the road and as she looks out into the woods she can see someone running.
Melinda and Jim are coming out of the movies and Melinda tells Jim about her shop lifter. Jim tells her that it is strange that someone would try to shoplift antiques. She continues to give him the details, but when they reach her car, she leans over to look at the front and checks for damages. Jim questions what she is doing and she tells him that she had hit a ghost on the way there. "Wait a minute, you tell me about the shoplifter, but you don't tell me about the ex-living person?" "Do you really want me to tell you about every single ghost I run across" She asks him. He replies by telling her, "absolutely not, I prefer to be on a need-to-know basis".
Back at their house, Melinda is walking to bed in her bathrobe. As she is getting ready to get in she looks out the window to see a ghost standing in the street. As she is watching, a car comes down the road and hits the ghost. Melinda is frightened as she watches the ghost stand up and walk toward her house. She turns around to see Jim sleep in the bed and then runs outside to find the ghost. When she gets outside he is gone.
The next day, Melinda is in her store when Ned comes back to tell her that he is not a thief. "If you are not a thief, then why did you steal those backstage passes?" Ned explains to her that he and his dad collected that stuff and he felt like he should have them. Melinda asks Ned where his father was and Ned tells her that he died. When Melinda tries to ask him another question, the boy just tells her that he has to go and leaves. After Ned walks out of the store, Melinda walks over to the window to watch him. As she watches Ned cross the street, she sees the ghost from the night before standing, with his face away from her, in the street and then he just disappears.
Later that night, Melinda is at home taking a shower, when the lights go out. Confused, she turns the water off and steps out to check on the lights. She looks around the room and calls for Jim. As she reaches for the light switch, a dark spirit moves around the ceiling and Melinda screams. Jim rushes in to see what is wrong. As he is calming her they look over and see 'September 29th' written on the shower door. Jim tells her, "ok, its need-to-know time".
The next day Melinda and Jim are walking through the square and Jim is asking her if September 29th means anything. Melinda tells him that all she knows is that it is next Friday. Jim seems upset that there is yet another ghost has come into their home and is bothering their lives. Melinda apologizes for having to burden him with this, but since Andrea died, he is all she has to talk to about the ghosts.
Melinda opens the shop and walks in to find a dark shadow of a man sitting at her desk. She asks him who he is and he tells her that he does not know. She asks him many questions and walks toward him, but he moves to the other side of the room. Finally he tells her that they use to call him Mac and that he had a wife that lives in Maine, her name is Donna Ellis, and she probably does not know that he is dead. Mac tells Melinda that it is important that she go to Maine to talk to Donna, then Delia walks in the store and Mac disappears.
Melinda goes to the front of the store and Delia hands her a cup of coffee as a peace offering. Apparently the last time Ned came into the store to talk to Melinda, he had stolen the backstage passes again. Melinda then questions Delia about Ned's father and Delia asks Melinda about Andrea. Both seem to have a hard time talking about their loss, so Delia just tells Melinda if she needs to talk she is just across square. As Delia starts to leave, Melinda asks her if Ned has ever said anything about feeling his fathers presence. Delia says that Ned has never said anything, but she knows that he does and she does too. She then turns and leaves the store.
That night at home, Melinda and Jim are discussing her recent encounter with the ghost. Melinda tells him that she would like to go to Maine and tell this woman in person, so that she can hurry up and get this ghost crossed over; there is something strange about him. Jim is not happy about her going to Maine, but he tells her that it would do her good to get out and way from her problems.
That Sunday morning, Melinda is driving through town and she sees Ned sitting in the square with a ghost talking into his ear. When the ghost sees her looking at him, he disappears and Melinda drives off.
The next scenes are of Melinda driving though the country on her way to Maine.
When Melinda reaches the town where the ghost's wife lives, Melinda walks up to the house and knocks at the door. A beautiful young woman answers the door and Melinda looks shocked. Melinda asks her if she is Donna Ellis and when the woman says yes, she offers her condolences. Donna is confused about what Melinda has said and asks what she meant. Melinda told her that she thought Donna knew that her husband had been hit by a car. The woman begins to cry and grabs her coat to go, when her husband Michael jogs up. The woman calls his name and runs to him. Donna tells her husband that Melinda has just told her that he was dead. Melinda is confused and embarrassed, so she apologizes and leaves.
Melinda is still in Maine and she calls Jim to tell him what has happened. Jim tells her to come home, but Melinda tells him that she is too stressed to drive and that she is going to get a room and start out again in the morning. After they hang up the phone the ghost writes a message for Jim, on a chalk board at the station, which says "LEAVE HER".
Still in Maine, Melinda is walking through town and she sees Donna at the mail box. Melinda walks over to her to apologize, but Donna asks her to leave her alone. As Donna is walking away, Melinda asks if she knows a man named Mac. Donna then turns around and says that Mac was her ex-husband. Melinda tells her that Mac was the one who had died and that he wanted Donna to know. When Melinda tells her that Mac wants her to know that he is sorry about the way he treated her when he was alive, Donna tells her that even is she did believe that Melinda could see him, she did not care and did not want to talk to Mac. Donna then tells Melinda to stay away from her and walks away.
Back in Grandview, Jim is responding to a call; a landlord had discovered a woman dead in her apartment. When Jim's partner leaves the room to call in the woman dead, Jim leans over and tells the dead woman "have a nice trip" and covers her face with the blanket. He then turns to start filling out some forms and the dead woman sits up in the bed, tells Jim "she's mine, leave her" and then falls back in the bed.
Melinda is in her hotel room in Maine and is trying to persuade the ghost to come out and talk to her. She is telling him that what he has done was not funny, when there is a knock at the door. Melinda opens the door to find Donna. Donna tells her that, "This doesn't mean that I believe any of this, but by chance if any of it is true, I thought I should hear what he had to say." Melinda welcomes her in and notices that Mac has showed up. Donna, looking for a sign that this is true, instructs Melinda to ask Mac what went wrong in their marriage. Melinda tells Donna "he said that you were married three years ago, that you moved to this town together in the same house that you live in now and then you divorced him a year latter". Donna then instructs Melinda to ask Mac why she divorced him, but Mac says that he does not remember, so Donna tells Melinda why. Donna tells her that Mac was obsessed with his ex-girlfriend. Donna then starts to talk to Mac and tells him "you should have just gone out and found that girl and figured it out, but instead you used me. You made me feel like I didn't count for anything". Mac then says, "I did find the girl I was in love with, who I am still in love with" and finally shows his face to Melinda and tells her "I should have never let you go". Melinda looks at him and calls him 'Kyle McCall'.
Donna looks at Melinda and asks why she called him Kyle; no one has called him by that name since college. Kyle tells Melinda that she should tell Donna that she is the one that he never got over, but Melinda tells Donna that he is apologizing. Donna says that it is all too weird for her and says that even if it is real, she does not forgive him; then she leaves. Melinda turns to him and says "you played me". She asks him why he sent her there and why his is doing this, but Kyle just says "don't you know, can't you see it. You just don't understand" and then he leaves.
Melinda is back in Grandview and is walking down the street holding hands with Jim. Melinda tells Jim that Kyle was the first person she ever thought she was in love with and that her hurt her. As she is tell Jim about her and Kyle in college, she is having a flashback. Melinda explains that they were together for a year in college, but when she told him about her gift he rejected her and she never saw him again. When the flashback is over, Jim and Melinda are sitting on a bench in the square and she promises him that she will get Kyle to cross over and get him out of their lives.
Melinda walks into her store to find the ghost, Jamey Barton, which has been following Ned, standing over the Grateful Dead passes. The ghost tells her that they were from his collection, that he has been tracking each piece to make sure that they got to the right person and the passes where the last of his collection. He tells her that he has been whispering in Ned's ear while he sleeps, telling him to steal the passes. Melinda is trying to get the ghost to cross over, but at 3:00 he leaves to meet Ned after school.
That night, Melinda is sitting in the floor at home reading though her old diaries from college. Finally, in one of the books, she finds a passage dated September 29th that said 'He looked at me so coldly! Like I was dead to him now. Maybe it was too much of a shock; maybe he'll call tonight and take me back". Still holding the book, Melinda walks out on the porch and calls for Kyle. When he comes to her he tells her that he was on the way to see her the day he died. He explains to her how he found her and how he died. Then he tells her that the only reason why he married Donna was because she looked like Melinda and that he was trying to recreate her; that is why he wanted Melinda to meet Donna. Melinda tells him how he hurt her and Kyle tells her that he was sorry and that he has regretted it everyday. Kyle then starts to talk about the days that they dated; all the while Jim is listening from inside the house. Melinda tells him that none of those things matter now; she has moved on and she is happy now. Kyle tells her that it is not over, that they can be together now. Melinda tries to tell him that there is nothing between them anymore, because he is dead, but he tells her that September 29th was the day that they broke up and September 29th will be the day that they get back together. Then he disappears and Melinda walks back into the house.
The next morning Melinda tells Jim that it is September 29th and she knows the Kyle probably has something planned, so Jim should be late coming home. Jim asks Melinda if there is anything still between them and reveals that he heard them talking last night. Melinda insists that she is over him and that Jim has nothing to worry about, because Kyle is dead. Jim is still a little worried, but he accepts her answer and leaves for work.
Melinda is walking down the street through town when she sees Ned sitting on the bench, in the square, with Jamey. With a smile she opens her store and walks in. A few moments later she walks over to Ned and sits down beside him; handing him the backstage passes. Melinda tells him that they are his, but he will have to work for them. She tells him that he will have to help out in the store after school and on weekends. Ned accepts the deal and runs off. After Ned is gone, Jamey tells her that she did a good thing. Then he looks up and can see the light. Melinda tells him that it is "the ultimate backstage pass". Jamey then runs into the light and disappears.
As she is looking though the square, Melinda sees Ned showing the tickets to Delia and Delia smiles and places her hand on her heart as to say thank you.
Melinda pulls up at home on the night of the 29th and can see things fling around through her bedroom window. She then runs into the house to see what is going on. When she gets to her room she finds that Kyle is throwing Jim's stuff around the house. She tells Kyle that he has to stop, because it is not going to make Jim go away just by getting rid of his things. Kyle tells her that one of them has to leave and it is not going to be him. He tells her that he loves her, but Melinda tells him that he does not know what love is and she will never forget how he treated her. He tells her that he hated himself for what he has done, but Melinda tells him that it is too late for them. After a few moments Kyle realizes that he is too late, but Melinda tells him that the beauty of her gift is that it is never too late to apologize.
Melinda is back in Maine walking through town talking to Donna. Donna is telling Melinda that he hurt her so much and Melinda tells her that he did the same to her, but they are both better off because of it. Kyle then appears and has Melinda tell Donna how incredibly sorry he is for how he treated her and he agrees that she is better off without him. Donna, crying, walks away and Melinda tells Kyle that it is time for him to cross over. He asks her if she thinks he will ever get a second chance to come back and do things the right way. Melinda tells him that it is nice to think so and Kyle then turns and starts walking toward the light. Before he walks in, Kyle turns back to Melinda and tells her "you were never forgettable" and then goes into the light. When he disappears, Melinda closes her eyes and smiles.
As she is walking away, there is ghost watching, bleeding from his hand.
