  • For a disclaimer: I hate rip off premises. The so called "Steal from the best and make it your own" not always convince me, especially when the audience can tell exactly how much is "stolen" and how much is "your own".

That being said, the season premiere of Ghost whisperer has clearly stolen the half-brother-with-powers theme from "Medium" and added the rival element of "Tru Calling" counterpart to his motivations. However, the "make it you own" award goes to the twist on Medium's main love triangle as Professor Payne admits his feelings for Melinda on camera for the first time; this way the intellectual turns out to be NOT the medium's husband but rather the silent man yearning on the side and the hunky guy – i.e. Jim – the guy she's married to (rather than the silent detective yearning on the side). Plus, there're still no children that could suffer the consequences of mum decision over her two guys.

The case is classic "Ghost whisperer" as Melinda must try to correct her mother's mistake that cost a little girl her parents over 15 years ago and give her the pictures his father saved for her before he died in order for her to reconnect with her birth family and more importantly to allow her to see a picture of her mother face for the first time. The episode also gives us some clues as to what should be the arc of the season: Mel's quest to reconnect with her father and half-brother and the mysterious message neither one of them could deliver to her last season finale.
  • Season 3 is here to stay.

Well Melinda is back, the story picks up from last season final episode. Some spirit is haunting her, she thinks his her father.

A girl came to the antique and left a trunk full of stuff from her parents, they both died in the same day when she was young. Melinda gets a plate for her courage to save the kids and a photographer takes some pictures. He finds something in the pictures, the shadow of a man and when he works the photo a bit he discovers that there are some things around Melinda's head. This is not the first time, she already saw a face in her x-ray's.

At the end it wasn't her father, is was the girls father and Melinda's mother is also involved.

They day the guy died, she was there and he asked her for help to say goodbye to his wife and daughter. She couldn't do it and the wife run to the hole cause by the gas explosion. There was a second explosion and she died too.

Melinda fixes the problem and the guy has a chance to say goodbye to his daughter and tell her about her family. He also pointed her to a photo of her mother.

There is something strange in Melinda's mother voice when they talk at the end. She tells Melinda to leave Grandview but when Melinda says no she has a strange reply.

I almost got the felling she was behind the force that wants Melinda out of there, strange felling, don't know.

Lets way to see what happens next.
  • OMG b rill :) from this episode you can tell season 3 is gonna be scary and soooo good.

Wow. I could not tell what was gonna happen! This epsisode has to be one of my fav so far!!!! New story lines starting to appear - Melinda's mum and dad used to live in Grandview and the underground grandview which look to be haunted soo far. The ghosts seem more evil than i can remember, which can be classed as a goood thing or a bad thing, i'm not too sure yet. all in all this episode has for sure set the standards for season 3 which you can easliy tell the Ghost Whisperer is here to stay for a very long time.
  • great season opener

This episode starts off where the last season ends. This episode made me cry & laugh & get a little spooked which is awesome. And for the record I don't like Melindas mom...something about her just erks me...I have a strange feeling that she knows more than she is telling Melinda. I hope we see Melindas dad soon...becuase I want to know what he has to say and who her brother is. But for the first episode I think it was great. And I think it gives us some insight into the rest of the season. I think its going to be a little darker this year.
  • the show is better than ever -- Rick Payne is a regular

    "Perfect"
Much as I liked GW the first season, I thought it lost its way toward the end of that season. This "lost way" exposed weaknesses in the series - weaknesses largely strengthened last season and represented very well in this episode.

The introduction of Jay Mohr to the cast is an immense boost to the energy of the series and the character himself is a wonderful complement as sometime-mentor/sometime-student to Melinda. The chemistry between them is tangible. And their comic timing together is flawless. The show, for me, is now their shared journey. And even Jim (largely amounting to a male June Cleever) is given something to do by glowering at Rick.

This episode underscored the improvements -- the beautiful scene where Rick "rehearses" his confession to Melinda, along with their wonder banter ... The show is reborn and better than ever.
  • Third season great way to kick things off

    9.2
    "Superb"
The third season was the best season opener for GW

As Jennifer comes into Melinda's store and wanting to

Give up her parents belongings. As her dad died as a young

Child with Melinda trying to help her bury the past and

Move on. As well as find a way to be reconnected

With her the dad that she never knew. Meanwhile, someone is

Taking pics of Melinda as something is fishy going on with

Her as not just having to do with her. But with

Her past. As there maybe something that she even doesn't know as well. About her family tree. Really good opener and glad that CBS didn't cancel it.
  • Pretty good episode, but the series, in general, has a habit of falling back on obvious twists. Definitely necessarily informative for the series narrative, though.

Sorry about the late reviews...I like to let an episode simmer in my mind so I can fully decide if I liked it or not. Its memorable moments are an important facet. Then I watch it again.

If you read the other reviews, you know what happened. I wont' recap that stuff.

I liked the interactions with her dad, including re-embodying herself as a girl. She'll always feel that way, and it feels right that she doesn't talk to him like they're both adults.

What is going on with the public records ghost? I like him, but he's a little moody. Not that I'm complaining. It's nice to have a ghost that doesn't fit in the mold of the others. Almost like he was scoping her out to see if she was like the others said and then when their comments were confirmed he got rough. I think he's overplayed his hand, with the threats...Melinda obviously has very little to fear, other than the dark.

Melinda's mom is a bore. Kill her off. Please! They can even make her a martyr or something just so she can come back "in the light" and give helpful advice like granny and dad do.

    Now, to some generalizations:

Am I the only one who likes Prof. Payne? He adds a light hearted banter to what would be an overly dark script. I'd like to see him start to get more hands on into Melinda's investigations (though, please not romantically!). Maybe he could even learn to forgive his wife...

Jim Jim Jim Jim Jim...I loved Jim in season 1. He became a drag in season 2. Melinda needs him to hold onto reality, so I don't want him killed off, but they need to work on the character. I don't think it's Conrad's acting that's the problem...they just aren't doing anything with him. It's been a few years into Jim and Melinda's marriage. Let's have an argument or some other realistic marriage problems. I don't claim some marriages aren't wonderful (mine own has been wonderful for 10 years and I don't see an end to that), but let's get real, here. I'm not asking for anyone to break their fidelity (or even test it), but a little marriage stress could bring them together even stronger.

Someone please flush Delia. Really. She's boring and predictable. You see ghosts? I don't see anything... duh. Big fat miss don't ask don't tell is a pain in the rear and her kid sucks (If we don't ever see him again, it'll be just fine with me!)

Other than that...I love the series! B-)
  • I waited all summer to find out what happened to Melinda and her the children that saved her.

Okay, writers, did you eat the children that saved Melinda? Couldn't you eat Gabriel too?

Melinda begins the quest to find her missing father and reunite with her brother. Makes you wonder why granny didn't help Gabriel like she helped Melinda. Do I smell favortism here? How come Melinda doesn't remember her father blocking the light, beckoning her to the bad side of life. I could hear Darth Vader - - - - Luke come to the dark side - - -as Gabriel and her father baited her. Yet she seems to be totally unaware that dad and bro are evil! That's a woman for you.
  • A really good episode! Ghosts can be stuck in time as this tale will show.

Ghosts can be stuck in time as this tale will show.

While getting x-rays to check for a possible head injury after the airplane crash Memorial fell on her, Melinda has to retake them because another face shows up on the film besides her own. Back at work a young woman brings in a trunk full of old stuff to have the shop consign. Delia rushes Melinda down to the steps with it and the trunk begins to move. It slams up against the wall and a door appears! Melinda looks in the door but can't see anything. Then the door disappears.

When she goes back upstairs the town council is there to present her with a plaque. A photographer from "Shame the Devil" blog takes some very interesting pictures!

Melinda visits her mom to find out answers to her questions about having a brother and her father. Her mother is quite mum on the whole affair. She does state she didn't have any other children though.

After closing the store a door appears in the road. Melinda opens it and she finds the trunk again and a man telling her that she killed his wife. She finally realizes the ghost is attached to the trunk and to the young woman who brought it in. She finds out that the young woman's biological parents were killed the same day in a gas explosion when the young lady was very young. She finally finds, with the help of her ghostly dad some newspaper clippings in the town archives. She also gets a dire warning from the ghost who resides in the archives. The newspaper clippings have a picture of her mother at the site of the gas explosion! She goes to visit her mother again explaining the ghost is blaming her for a death and her mother finally explains what happened that day. This helps Melinda make peace with the ghost and with the daughter. But before she does that she gets a dire warning from her mother! Good show!
  • Good aepisode. A little condfusing, but still a good episode!

This was an interesting episode of Ghost Whisperer, and it started the new, third season of the show onto a good start.

I thought the storylien was well written, and it was quite a suspenseful episode. I really enjoyed it and I thought they did a great job with this one.

I was a little confused at some points, but as a whole, they did well to explain wvery aspect, and make it as enjoyable as possible.

Overall, a good episode. I was a little confused, but that can be explained, as I was half-asleep! Be wide awake, and I would highly recommen this episode!
  • Questions are made but hardly answered...

    "Superb"
Defiantly a much darker premiere then last years farewell to beloved Andrea. "The Underneath" had me from beginning to end, answering (a few) question after another while leaving the bigger ones later in the season. If you didn't catch it this episode takes place only a couple of days after the accident.

Gordon's review (only because Jim/Delia/Payne didn't have much of a character development from prior years.):

Melinda: We knew from the very beginning ("Pilot") Mel had some defiant family scares left unhealed. After 2 years of dropping a few questions and spewing some spouts it was finally coming into light. Beth/Mommy Gordon: Finally! we know why she's been trying to block out her ability and preventing Gram's from teaching Mel. It was quite selfish prior to this episode but know after knowing her past, I would too. Why would you want a gift that caused a death of a women in which your gift caused. Still though her wanting Mel to leave Grandview is strange and hopefully plays more in the future.

Tom/Daddy Gordon: Defiantly nice to see him "in the light", I did feel like his character had shifted from "dark sinistery" to the new "helpful daddy" but I'm guessing/hoping again I'd play more into the future *crosses fingers*. Also if you rewatch "Melinda's First Ghost" or whatever episode he was first "shown" in you can clearly tell he wasn't this cheerful of a guy.

Brother???: How sad, he only got a little mention of possibly being Gabriel. Hopefully though they do keep this up cause I want it to be a shocker rather then a huge slap in the face when revealed.

Overall, I loved it. Not a single letdown, I was looking forward to new opening credits but these will do. I just hate the puffy hairdo Jen sported in early Season 1.

Things I wish for: (1.) Gabriel to have been in it but then again I did like the new "Dark Spirit" a little more hands on then Gabriel's approach. (2.) for Ramano and Laughing Man make a reappearance, kinda feels empty without them at times.Otherwise, fantastic job Mr. John Gray, you truly have talent in remake-overing a series that people thought would get formulaic.
  • wow. this is one of my favorite episodes of the series.

although at some points slow, its a worth watching episode. melinda learns many secrets about her dad in this heart- racing episode. melinda first gets suprised at her shop with a thanks from the community about her saving the children from the last episode of season 2. delia planned it all. but as melinda was taking a box down to the cellar. she noticed that a box moved. a spirit is attached to it. melinda eventually takes a visit to her moms house and wants to know more about her father. she told her that she thinks her father is dead. but then realizes the ghost haunting melinda is not her father. melinda's mom is holding a secret. eventually melinda finds evidence of a tunnel collapse in grandview. melinda also found out by this article that melinda's mom used to live in grandview. the ghost that is haunting melinda is only haunting her because he thinks is is melinda's mom. melinda's mom accidently killed the ghosts wife by her untalented way of talking to spirits. the shocking ending of the episode shows melinda going to her moms house again. melinda's mom tries to tell her to move out of grandview and she told her that grandview is only going to bring more problems for melinda. then it shows melinda's mom getting upset with her because she said she wouldnt leave grandview. "I knew you wouldnt do it," melinda's mom replied. an action packed revealing episode.
  • I LOVED THIS EPPY!!

This episode was amazing! i loved the Jim and Mel scenes and there was more this episode and I hope it is like that the whole season! I am glad we actually got to see Mel's father and mother and I hope we find out why Mel's dad left her. This episode was so exciting! I never knew "Same As It Never Was" had a basement. I wonder if that face that was in Mel's x-ray was her father or the ghost. I wonder what Mel's mom ment when she said that Grandview was a dangerous place for them and i wonder what else her mom is hiding.
  • Fantastic season premiere continuing with storyline from last season!!!!!!!!!!

Omg!!!! This episode was great I REALLY liked it!! It was a great way to start of the third season with a continuing storyline. I'm really interested to find out why Mel's mom was acting all weird with the whole," I knew you'd stay" thing. I'm starting to think that Mel's mom is the evil here not her dad after all he was trying to help her out with the ghost. Maybe Mel's mom is like helping out Romano or something or even worse maybe she had something to do with Mel's death that would be something, killing her own daughter. With this premiere I have a very good feeling that this season will by far be the best yet!!!!!!!

Ghost Whisperer returned with a bang and a whimper this week. The bang was in finding out Grandview itself is a problem for people with abilities and even without Gabriel some ghost are hostile towards Melinda. The whimper was in that even though the episode set us up for more surprises for this season. This episode was really just a typical GW story. From Jim and Melinda's sweeter than pie marriage to the support of Cameron Manhiem, to the now common place scary antagonistic ghost. All the basic elements we've been conditioned for since season 2 were in play. Not that this is a bad thing I still liked the episode and suggest that now if not the beginning of the series is the best time to start watching.
  • What a great way to start off the season! So much suspense...

When I first heard that season three was gonna be quite different from the past seasons, I was a bit worried. After watching this episode, I am no longer worried. I like the change, and although sometimes I don't feel I can handle it, I like how dark the show is at times.

It looks like Melinda's parents and her past are gonna play a big role this season, which is great because we all want to know more. Why does is her mother so reluctant to give away any information? What is Melinda's father's reason for leaving? What will that blogger fellow do? And what did Prof Payne want to say to Melinda, eh? There's so much going on already, not that that's a bad thing.

    Oh Wow...What a Start!

    I haven't expected it being so creepy!

I was creeped out while watching it! Mels basement and this creepy door...I'm sure there is something bigger about this! Mel gets sucked up in this door and there is this ghost who is very powerful and when Mel realizes she still stands there on the street where this door appeared she almost get run over by a car!

Yes her mom is back...And I should say...she isn't very helpful! She really hates Granview! She told us what happend that day in 1982...When she saw this accident...this Gas explosion...When Grandview was totally destroyed! But she refuses talking about Mels father but I'm sure she knows more than she tells!:)

Jim was again such a sweetheart!:) He's back too and he wasn't working all the time!Halleluja!:P

I really liked this ep: creepy, EVIL, dramatic and the ghost's story..AWESOME! I really like the construction of the episode: The most important this was this Grandview story, the ghost's one was rather a backround action! GREAT!

    Keep it up GW!
