The prolific John Creasey wrote under a variety of pseudonyms as well as his own name, and, as "J.J. Marric", had perhaps his greatest success with the many books he wrote about Commander George Gideon, a senior London police detective who is also an ordinary suburban family man. In the 1957 movie "Gideon's Day" (directed by John Ford, no less), Jack Hawkins played Gideon. It was inevitable that TV would also turn to the Gideon books and the title of this series was probably selected to remind viewers of Ford's movie. John Gregson, his movie career now waning, moved into TV to play the Commander and did a good job. The show was well-made, but no better than average, and only lasted one season.
