When the castaways are waking up on the boat, you can see the original actors in the pilot still sleeping. When Gilligan, the Skipper and the Professor are on the beach, you can see the back of the original actor for the Professor, but they show Russell Johnson in the close-ups.
This is the only Christmas episode of the series.
Jingle Bells was playing on the radio as the epiosde begians.
Lovey: Coast Guard cutter? Thurston: We thought it was going to be the Navy, at least. Lovey: I'm glad they didn't find our island. We're both terribly overdressed.
Thurston: Where's the rescue party? I thought this was an afternoon affair. Skipper: Should be here any time now, Mr. Howell. Lovey: I certainly hope so, or I'll have to change into evening clothes.
Gilligan: I feel like I'm on fire. Skipper: You are. Get your feet out of the fire.
(Gilligan is up in a coconut tree) Skipper: What do you see? Gilligan: Nothing! I have my eyes closed!
Theme of episode: Don't count your problems. Count your blessings.
The flashback story in this episode was Sherwood Schwartz's way of reusing the story from the unaired pilot. Several scenes were left intact; the ones involving the roles that were recast were reshot using the current actors.
Episode Title: Birds Gotta Fly, Fish Gotta Talk The episode title is a parody of an oft quoted line from the song "Can't Help Lovin' That Man of Mine" from the musical "Show Boat". The original line reads: "Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, I got to love one man 'til I die, Can't help lovin' that man of mine..."
