It was cancelled in favour of Gunsmoke.

Apparently Gunsmoke was being aired on Saturday evening, the same evening as Gilligan's Island. At the time Gunsmoke was a 30 minute show.

When the new season of shows aired, apparently the wife of one of the CBS honchos was upset that her favourite show, Gunsmoke, didn't make the line up so CBS cancelled Gilligan's Island and Run Buddy Run, 2 half hour shows, in order to make room for Gunsmoke.

wheelchair asked why Hallmark stopped showing it not CBS

I am not sure why they stopeed airing it. Hogans Heroes is not on anymore either. I heard they are getting Family Ties so maybe that is why

I'd much rather see Gilligan and Hogan, than Family Ties. I think TV was much better in the 60's, pre cable!

I never did understand the show "Hogan's Heros". It was supposed to be a prison camp and I never understood "prisoners" roaming around free and helping the enemy....at least that's what I got from the show.

I don't get Hallmark, so I can't say why it dropped GI.

This is in response to a couple of earlier posts. First, Gunsmoke had expanded to an hour in 1961, six years before it was "cancelled" in 1967. It had been airing on Saturday nights, but GI aired on Monday nights, along with Run, Buddy, Run!. CBS had scheduled a new pilot, called Doc, to follow GI. Alas, both shows ended up getting the ax. When Paley ordered his execs to find room on the schedule for Gunsmoke, he didn't say how, but when he saw the new schedule, he was reportedly happy to see GI gone (the snob!). Though it was a ratings winner, and Gunsmoke had been dropping in the ratings, he was sensitive to criticism for airing "silly" shows like GI, as well as the rural comedies (The Beverly Hillbillies, etc.), the latter of which were cancelled wholesale in 1971, in favor of "mature" sitcoms like All In the Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show .

Of course, as we now know, Monday nights breathed new life into Gunsmoke, which moved back into the top ten. What would have happened to GI had Paley not intervened is left to posterity.

Also, as for Hogan's Heroes, remember it was a spoof. Their German captors were portrayed as dimwits, so the HH gang could move around behind their backs.

I don't think that would be the reason for the Hallmark Channel to pull off "Perry Mason", though...

The reason why most channels stop airing shows they once did is because they lose the rights to it. This happens all the time.
