Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale... So now the seven castaways are stranded on the legendary fictional island. This is one of the many pilot episodes that sold, just didn't get aired (Such as Captain Jack, which was renamed Leave it to Beaver), instead they altered the show drastically, replacing actors, characters, and the theme song.moreless

      • As a plane flies overhead, the castaways use fish to spell out the word HELP on the beach. Gilligan ruins their rescue hopes by constructing the letter P backwards. However since all the remaining letters are correct, anyone seeing the letters from the air should be able to decipher the word HELP.

      • The pilot was rejected by the studio three times before making it on the fall schedule.

      • The SS Minnow was named after former FCC head Newton Minow who stated that TV was "America's Vast Wasteland."

      • The pilot episode filming in Hawaii was delayed because of the assassination of President Kennedy. You'll also notice the flag in the background of the opening credits is at half mast.

    • NOTES (7)

      ADD NOTES
      • Gilligan's name was NEVER "Willy" in any episode or pilot that was ever shot or aired. The only mention of that name was in some notes and an early press release by Schwartz. Somehow, the public got the unaired pilot and the newly discovered press release (with the mention of "Willy Gilligan") confused with each other. The pilot episode's radio news broadcast of the missing shipmates never mentions Gilligan's first name.

      • This episode aired one time on TV. On a Friday night, October 16th, 1992, TBS ran it after it had been dug up nearly 30 years since it had last been screened for anyone. It aired with a brief introduction by Bob Denver.

      • This episode's plot would largely be recycled into episode 12, "Birds Gotta Fly, Fish Gotta Talk".

      • The exact running time of this pilot, as presented on Columbia House tape #10615 as "The Lost Pilot", is (00:22:35) [22-minutes, 35-seconds].

      • Ginger, Mary-Ann, and the Profesosr are different. Mary-Ann is called Bunny, and is like our current Ginger, Ginger is more Mary-Ann like but still named Ginger. The Profesosr is more of a ladies man, and still called the Professor.

      • This episode is unaired.

      • This episode was made before Gilligan's Island aired. It was never shown to the public until October 16th, 1992.
