Gilligan's Island

Season 3 Episode 9

Ring Around Gilligan

Aired Saturday 8:30 PM Nov 07, 1966 on CBS

  • Trivia

    • Ginger's slap hits Dr. Balinkoff toward the back of his head, not his cheek which he holds in the next shot.

    • Dr. Balinkoff's monkey assistant is named Igor. In "The Friendly Physician", his human assistant had the same name. Both the monkey and the human wear a similar black suit. Dr. Balinkoff probably changed Igor into a monkey to take to the island.

  • Quotes

    • Balinkoff: Igor, our robots are getting better every time.
Ginger: Mission accomplished, Master. The raft is destroyed.
      Balinkoff: That's a good...little girl.
Ginger: Have you any further orders, Master?
Balinkoff: No, you'd better return to your friends.
Ginger: I hear and I obey.

    • Dr. Balinkoff: You know who I am, Gilligan.
Gilligan: I know who you are, Gilligan.
Dr. Balinkoff: No, no, no, I am Dr. Boris Balinkoff.
      Gilligan: The mad scientist.
Dr. Balinkoff: No. Scientist, yes, mad, no. (laughs crazily)

    • Dr. Balinkoff: And now, go back to your little grass shack.
Gilligan: Yes, mister. Mister master. Mister master mad. Mister--
Dr. Balinkoff: Will you go, please!

  • Notes

    • Theme of episode: How to succeed in the hero business without even trying.

    • When Ginger destroys the raft she uses the side of the axe blade, rather than the more effective edge.

    • At about the same time, the "Avengers" episode "Return of the Cybernauts" used a mind-control plot very similar to this one.

    • This episode marks the 4th appearance of actor Vito Scotti; giving him the title of most appearances by a non-regular cast memeber. Twice as The Japanese Sailor in "So Sorry, My Island Now" and "Diogenes Won't You Please Come Home;" and as Dr. Boris Balinkoff in "The Friendly Physcian," and "Ring Around Gilligan." The runners up are actor Hans Conried for his two performances as Wrong Way Feldman in "Wrong Way Feldman" and "The Return of Wrong Way Feldman," actor Denny Miller; once as Duke the surfer in "Big Man On a Little Stick" and as an actor playing Tongo the Apeman in "Our Vines Have Tender Apes," and actor Eddie Little Sky playing a native in two separate episodes: "Gilligan's Mother In-Law" and "Topsy Turvy."

    • Note: this plan was also used in Goldfinger. And if i'm not correct that also had Vito Scotti in it.

    • Vito Scotti would have made another guest appearance as a modern-day pirate if Gilligan had not been suddenly cancelled before the fourth season.

  • Allusions

    • Dr. Balinkoff: Good show, my fair lady.

Dr. Balinkoff's complimentary remark to Mrs. Howell turns into a salute to a famous Broadway play.
