It's stated that only Gilligan would be smallest and thinnest enough to fit in the missile, but actually that description would be Mary Ann.
There were any number of ways the castaways could have made their island noticeable to the reconnaissance plane, rather than the small mirror, from spelling out with logs, rocks or even pieces of the Minnow a distress message or lighting a fire on the beach big enough for the smoke to be seen, for two examples. It isn't as though they didn't have time to prepare, and are we to believe they were that dumb?
Since the military knew that the warhead wouldn't explode, shouldn't they have tried to retrieve it after the landing? After all, it was a very valuable piece of military hardware that could have fallen into enemy hands.
Continuity Error: Due to the use of actual archive stock footage of missiles in portions of the episode, scenes of the missile before launching depict it as being rather enormous, but when the missile actually lands on the island it is actually rather small, and also appears different than in the stock footage (the most noticeable being the "USA" markings).
(The missile soars toward the island as the castaways brace themselves, but the missle crash-landes into the water and nothing happens.)
Professor: It didn't detonate.
Gilligan: And it didn't explode, either!
Ginger: Although I was a nurse. For one day, I was Ben Casey's nurse. And you know something, Professor? In that one hour, we saved six people. And if it hadn't been for the commercials, we would've saved eight.
Lovey: Thurston, are you sure that you want to make a new will?
Thurston: Yes, I'd like to get things right before we take a long walk up that great flight of stairs to the big bank vault in the sky.
Mary Ann: What are you doing?
Gilligan: Straightening things so everything will be nice and neat when it get blown up.
Mary Ann: I don't see how you can exercise anyway in that dress, it's so tight. I'm surprised it doesn't cut off your circulation.
Ginger: Honey, in Hollywood, the tighter the dress, the more she circulates.
Theme of episode: Sometimes it takes a life-and-death situation to show us what's really important.
