Sookie St. James
In this episode, when Madeline and Louise are leaving the concert to go the party, Madeline tells Rory that the party is in a building on the corner of Waverly and First. There is no such intersection in New York City -- Waverly Place does not actually intersect with First Avenue or with First Street.
In this episode, Paris comments that she does not eat dairy when Lorelai asks about the girls eating pizza. But in Season 7, in the episode "Hay Bale Maze", Paris is very upset about Logan drinking her milk.
When Lorelai runs into Luke at the town rummage sale, he is very happy about his newly acquired sushi refrigerator magnets. However, in "21 is the Loneliest Number," Luke is completely unfamiliar with sushi. In that episode, Lorelai eventually tells him that it's all raw fish and just to dip it in soy sauce and swallow it really quickly. It is strange that in this episode Luke was so excited about purchasing a magnetized replica of a food he is unfamiliar with and does not even like.
Lorelai offers to give Rory, Paris, Madeline, and Louise the four concert tickets that Sookie got, and Lorelai says that she and Sookie will just buy cheap seats somewhere else when they get there. Even considering the sweet and agreeable person that Sookie is, it's unusual and insensitive that Lorelai wouldn't even ask her first if this was okay, since Sookie was the one who got the tickets in the first place.
During the first part of the scene where Lorelai is mending clothes for the rummage sale whilst talking to Sookie about Rachel, the end of a microphone can be seen above Lorelai's head.
Brandon Routh who will play Clark Kent/Superman in 2006 Superman Returns, is one of the college boys that the girls meet at the concert and invite back to their apartment for a party.
When Lorelai asks Sookie why she didn't know about Rachel, Sookie tells Lorelai that when Rachel was there Lorelai and Rory were just moving into their house and Rory was 11. In "Written in the Stars" Luke said that they had known each other for 5 years, making Rory 13 when they met, so wouldn't it make more sense that Lorelai did not know about Rachel because she did not yet know Luke?
In this episode Lorelai comes across an old hoodie that once belonged to Luke's ex. This sweater was also shown on an episode of Charmed that aired two weeks earlier "Wrestling with Deamons."
In this episode, Lorelai goes on and on about how the Bangles were her favorite band in high school. However in "Lorelai's Graduation Day", Rory finds a signed copy of the Go-Go's first album and when Jess inquires as to why that's so remarkable, Rory says that the Go-Go's were Lorelai's favorite band when she was Rory's age.
Possible explanation, most people, especially teenagers, have more than one 'favorite band'.
In the episode "Double Date," Lorelai said she could not lie to another mom (such as Lane's mom). However, in this episode, Lorelai was willing to go along with the lie Lane was going to tell her mother in order for Lane to go to the concert. When Lane told her mom the truth about the concert, Lorelai acted bummed out that Lane hadn't lied to her Mom in order to go. But wouldn't Lorelai had to have told Lane's mom the truth anyway?
In this episode Sookie says that Rory was 11 when they moved into their current house. However in "Rory's Birthday Parties," Babette recalls Rory living at their house when she was 10.
Lorelai: Hey, was Rachel pretty?
Lorelai: I'm just curious, was she pretty?
Sookie: She was pretty.
Lorelai: Like, what kind of pretty?
Sookie What do you mean "what kind of pretty"?
Lorelai: I mean, like, was she a Catherine Zeta-Jones kind of pretty or a Michelle Pfeiffer-y pretty or...
Sookie: She was an Elle MacPherson kind of pretty.
Lorelai: That's an intense kind of pretty.
Sookie: You're not kidding.
Lorelai: I never pictured Luke with an Elle MacPherson kind of pretty.
Sookie: No? Pictured him more with a Lorelai Gilmore kind of pretty?
Lorelai: Oh, the air up here must be very thin because you're delirious.
Sookie: And you're jealous.
Sookie: You're jealous of Rachel.
Lorelai: You're accusing me of being jealous of a woman who dumped a man I'm not even interested in five years ago?
Lorelai: And you don't think that's crazy?
Sookie: Oh I do think that's crazy.
Lorelai: Right, I'm not jealous.
Sookie: Yeah you are.
Miss Patty: (noticing Lorelai's sweatshirt) Well this looks really familiar.
Lorelai: Oh, that's mine. Er, I saw it first and then I bought it so it's mine now.
Miss Patty: Really? Who brought it in?
Lorelai: I think Luke did and judging by his very hostile reaction he obviously wasn't done wearing it yet.
Miss Patty: Oh my, I wonder if...
Miss Patty: What?
Miss Patty: (to Sookie) I bet this was Rachel's.
Sookie: Oh my God, Rachel's?
Lorelai: Rachel? Who's Rachel?
Sookie: Rachel was Luke's very serious girlfriend. It does look like her.
Lorelai: When did Luke have a girlfriend?
Miss Patty: Oh this must have been what, five, six years ago? Did she break that man's heart. It was terrible.
Lorelai: How did I not know about this?
Sookie: Honey, you had an 11 year old kid and you were just moving into this house. Plus Rachel traveled all the time. She was a photographer.
Miss Patty: Archeologist.
Miss Patty: Or a flight attendant.
Lorelai: I can't believe I never even heard about it.
Miss Patty: At least I think so.
Sookie: Well Luke never talks about it. No one else likes to talk about it because he could probably kill you with that coffee pot if he wanted to.
Lorelai: Wow. I never pictured Luke having a girlfriend, or a broken heart.
Madeline: I find your mother completely fascinating.
Rory: Funny. So does she.
Madeline: It's almost more like having a big sister.
Louise: And you like her, don't you?
Rory: She's my best friend.
Madeline: Truly, completely fascinating.
Lorelai: (Looking for Madeline and Louise) Hi, I was wondering if college boys live here or friends of college boys and if they had...
Woman: I don't talk to people. People annoy me! (Slams door)
Lorelai: Okay. (Keeps knocking on doors)
Paris: She's going to knock on every door in the building, isn't she?
(Sookie knocks on a door, and a dog barks loudly)
Sookie: Aah! Let's follow your mother!
Paris: I wonder if I was missing if my mom would come looking for me like that.
Rory: Paris, you know she would.
Paris: Yeah. Or at least she'd send somebody.
Lorelai: Yeah, see those two idiots over there? They're 16...underage and I bet you're not. I also bet those big fancy party cups aren't holding lemonade. You really want to end any further conversations with me so step aside Skippy. Move your asses outside...now! (Out in the hallway) Hey, I am not even going to begin to tell you how completely insane it is to take off with anyone you don't know, or drink things that you don't know what's in them, or act like you have a clue when you don't, but so help me God if you ever pull a stunt like this again, it will not be around my kid! Do you understand me?
Madeline: Do you think your mom is sorry she got pregnant so young?
Paris: Of course she is.
Rory: Gee, thanks.
Paris: I didn't mean it that way, I just meant--
Rory: I mean, I don't think she'd recommend it, but I think she's happy with the way things turned out.
Lorelai: (walking in) I am?
Rory: Yes, you are.
Lorelai: Okay. Just checking.
Lorelai: (from the kitchen) Ah! There's a man in my kitchen, somebody call the constable.
Luke: (coming into the living room. Lorelai following) Your mom's a fruit cake.
Lorelai: Fruit cakes by the door please.
Luke: Good bye Rory, I wish you luck - (looks at Lorelai) with everything.
Rory: I appreciate that.
Lane: I'm getting a soda. Anybody want anything?
Lorelai: Yes. The night of my 14th birthday back, so I could right the green-hotpants-roller-disco-outfit wrong.
Louise: (about Lorelai) I can't imagine having a baby at 16.
Paris: Well then keep your knees shut.
Lorelai: Hey, you didn't wake me up!
Rory: I set the clock.
Lorelai: Yes, but see the clock stops ringing when you throw it against the wall, giving me ample time to fall back asleep. You, however never stop yapping no matter how hard I throw you, thus ensuring the wake up process.
Louise: What, are you afraid?
Rory: Of going into a strange city with two guys I don't know? Yeah!
Rory: So did you guys find it okay?
Paris: There's no sign on this street.
Rory: I know, that's why I told you to turn right at the big rooster statue.
Paris: I thought you were kidding.
Lorelai: Oh no, we never kid about Monty.
(trying to find a place to work on their debate for school)
Paris: My mother is having the entire place redone, she wants all evidence of my father out of there. So unless you want to sit on no furniture, while watching three Harvey Fierstein impersonators rip up the carpet and paint everything a ridiculous shade of white and call it 'angel's kiss' then we're going to have to find somebody else's house to go to.
Madeline: My brother has the measles.
Louise: My mom's having an affair.
Luke: What the hell do you think you're wearing?
Lorelai: Uh, a hat.
Luke: Take that off.
Luke: Now that is not yours, take it off.
Lorelai: But I'll have hat hair!
Rory: We haven't argued about the hat.
Lorelai: What hat?
Rory: The one on your head, Annie Oakley.
Lorelai: Who wants cheese?
Rory: Are there crackers?
Lorelai: Somewhere in the state of Connecticut, yes, there are crackers.
Rory: And in the Gilmore house?
Lorelai: Who wants cheese?
Up until this episode, Alexis Bledel didn't know who the Bangles were. It's funny since Rory has been brought up with the music.
Kelly Bishop (Emily), Edward Herrmann (Richard) and Yanic Truesdale (Michel) do not appear in this episode.
This episode has a special appearance by The Bangles.
- "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" by the Jayhawks
- "Hero Takes A Fall" by The Bangles
- "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles
- "Walk Like An Egyptian" by The Bangles
Sookie: (to Lorelai) Did you ever see Everest?
Everest is a 1998 movie about the climbing of Mount Everest.
Louise: Are you two still Joanie Loves Chachi?
Joanie Loves Chachi is the TV spinoff of Happy Days.
Louise: So how good of a kisser is Paul Bunyan anyway?
Paul Bunyan is a mythical giant lumberjack from a tall tale.
Sookie: She loved to climb things and fling herself off of cliffs and dive into these really tiny lakes and ride big wild horses and fly planes.
Lorelai: So she was Wonder Woman?
Wonder Woman is a female superhero who wears a leotard, carries a lasso and flies an invisible plane.
Paris: So unless you want to sit on no furniture while watching three Harvey Fierstein impersonators rip up the carpet and paint everything a ridiculous shade of white and call it 'angel's kiss' then we're going to have to find somebody else's house to go to.
Harvey Fierstein is an actor known for his semi-autobiographical play and film Torch Song Trilogy. He is also a drag queen and columnist on gay issues.
Lorelai: What hat?
Rory: The one on your head, Annie Oakley.
Annie Oakley was a sharpshooter from the American west who starred in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show in 1885.
Lane: All three of them?
Rory: Double, double, toil and trouble.
The three witches in Shakespeare's Macbeth predict the futures of Macbeth and Banquo, glorious with hidden ominousness.
Rory: With the pricking of my thumb, something wicked this way comes.
The second witch in Macbeth says this in Act IV, scene i. She warns Macbeth that something in his future will be ruinous.
Rory: They've just moved off the plan to dump the pig's blood on me at prom.
Rory is referencing a pivotal scene from Stephen King's novel Carrie.
Paris: And before it's dark, they'll have every picnic basket that's in Jellystone Park.
This is a line from the theme song for The Yogi Bear Show. Yogi and his pal Boo-Boo were always trying to filch picnic baskets at Jellystone Park.
Rory: This stuff is like Tribbles.
This refers to the Star Trek episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" which featured small, furry, little creatures that reproduced at an alarming rate and took over the U.S.S. Enterprise.
