Episode Recap

Lorelai and Sookie are standing outside the Twickham house. They are awed by the size of the house and Sookie suggests Lorelai put in a sewing room. She comments on how sweet it was of Luke to want to buy the house for them. Sookie asks Lorelai if things are still okay with her and Luke. She is worried that Lorelai might be getting cold feet. Lorelai reassures her that she hasn't changed her mind.

Rory is at the first informational meeting for her community service. She seems very out of place, surrounded by the group of bored offenders.

Lorelai and Luke come down from his apartment arguing about movies. Luke doesn't understand how one Jedi knight takes away the powers of other Jedi knight just by standing on higher ground. It has been bothering Luke for a long time and she encourages him to just let it go. Luke brings up Bewitched, starting Lorelai or her rant. Luke recommends that she just let it go. Lorelai asks if maybe they should stop going to movies but Luke suggests that maybe they should just stop caring. Lorelai kisses him good-bye and heads off to the Dragonfly. T.J. is off to the side, building shelves for Luke. When Luke walks by, T.J. strokes the shelf and asks Luke if he has seen the shelves he built. He asks Luke if he can put up a sign on the shelves advertising his services. Luke doesn't want him advertising in the diner but he allows him to hand out his cards to interested parties.

Lorelai is walking around the pet fair enjoying the animals when Patty pops up behind her. She asks accusingly what she is doing at the pet fare. Lorelai looks a little guilty but she tells Patty she's just enjoying the animals. Patty asks the attendant if Lorelai is on some blacklist. The attendant seems a bit confused by the question. Patty accuses Lorelai of having a bad record with animals and starts listing the misfortunate pets, which have been in her care. Lorelai gives up and turns to leave. She bumps into Liz who is very excited about Luke and Lorelai's engagement. They show each other their engagement rings. Liz asks about Rory. Lorelai is a bit evasive and simply tells her she is staying with her grandparents for the summer. Liz says good-bye and rushes off. Lorelai, feeling, sad and lonely about Rory, moves over to the cage and purchases the shaggy dog.

Emily and Richard are at the breakfast table when Rory walks in aimlessly. They encourage her to sit but continue to chat to each other and compare schedules. Rory sits quietly; she seems out of place. Emily and Richard leave the table to begin their busy day. They tell Rory to finish the pastries on the table. A little later Rory is sitting in the pool house watching TV. Once again, this normally dynamic and busy young woman seems very bored and out of place. Rory wanders into the main house and begins chatting in Spanish with the maid. A while later Rory is still speaking in Spanish to the maid while she helps her polish the silver. Emily returns home and is displeased to see Rory helping the maid do a job she is paid for. She rudely sends the maid to put away the vacuum and reprimands Rory for doing the maid's job.

Lorelai answer's the door and excitedly pulls Luke into the house. She introduces him to the shaggy dog she just bought. She rambles on excitedly while Luke looks on in disbelief. Luke finds out that the slightly neurotic, new addition to the household was eventually to be named Paul Anka. As they chat in the kitchen, Paul Anka comes into the kitchen and begins to eat. Lorelai excitedly pulls Luke out the door so Paul Anka doesn't become self-conscious while he eats. Luke is incredulous but he follows Lorelai to the front porch where they tell each other about their days. Luke tells Lorelai that he spoke to some contractors about remodeling the Twickham house. When he recommends that they paint her house before they sell it, Lorelai suggests that maybe they should keep the house. She does not want to rent it but suggest several crazy reasons to keep the house not the least of which was to make it into a recording studio. Luke is a bit taken aback by these proposals but he agrees to think about it.

Emily and Richard have realized that Rory has been a bit lost without school and Emily was unhappy with her socializing with the help. They have invited her to the main house for drinks in order to talk to her. They inform her that they have made some contacts for her so she will be able to get a job with flexible hours so that she can fit it her community service. Rory is happy with the prospect of getting a job. The next day Rory enters the patio to find Emily and her friends having a tea party. She seems reluctant to join them but sits and chats. Emily tells her of a job that has opened up in the DAR. Rory finds out that she will have to join the DAR to work there. They eventually invite her to join them for tea but Rory whispers to Emily that she needs a ride to her community service. Emily immediately excuses herself and takes Rory.

Lorelai drives up to her house with Paul Anka. She opens the car door to let him out and is delighted to see that he isn't afraid to jump out of the car. As they walk toward the house, Lorelai sees a strange man on the roof of the house. When a second man appears on the porch she debates on whether 'flight or fight' is the best course of action. To her relief, Luke appears on the roof with the first man. He explains that they are trying to figure out how many joists are needed to carry up for the extension. He said he realized that she loved this house so they are just going to remodel. Needless to say Lorelai is delighted. She looks back at her car and is amazed to see that Paul Anka has locked himself in her car.

Emily drives up to Rory's community service meeting spot and begins reading a paper giving Rory tips on how to interact with her fellow felons. When she gets out of the car, she walks up to the group of workers who just stare at the girl who got out of a Jaguar to join them.

In the diner, Luke is sitting talking to an architect about the remodel of Lorelai's house. Liz is listening in at the counter adding in a comment or two. When the architect leaves, Liz asks Luke if T.J. could be the contractor for the project. Obviously, Luke is unwilling to let that happen but Liz begs him until he tells her he will think about it.

At the side of a road, Rory and her group are spearing garbage. She seems very uncomfortable with the situation.

Lorelai enters her bedroom. She is dumbfounded to find a large hole in her bedroom wall. At the diner, Luke is taking an order when Lorelai comes into the diner and without a word drags him out. She takes him to her house. She is barely able to speak but she shows him the hole. After a moments thought, he realizes that it is T.J.'s handiwork and threatens to kill him. Lorelai calms him down and they figure out a way to solve the problem.

Rory returns from her community service a little dirty and disheveled. She looks the application for the DAR on the table and sighs.

A little later, Rory timidly enters the diner. Luke's back is to the door and he tells the customer that the diner is closed. When he turns around, he sees it is Rory and he invites her in. As he pours her coffee, they make small talk about the small changes in the town. Finally, Rory asks how 'people' are obviously asking him how her mom is. Luke is a bit uncomfortable with the question. He tells her that people are good, shuffles a bit and then reluctantly tells her that he and Lorelai are engaged. Rory is stunned and hurt but she attempts to put on a brave face and congratulates him. She thanks him for the coffee and makes a hasty retreat with Luke looking sadly after her.

The next morning, Luke and a work crew are on the top of Lorelai's roof fixing the hole. Lorelai exits the house sleepily. She tells Luke that she is happy they are fixing the house but asks him if they could start a little later the next day. Luke seems annoyed with the request and Lorelai asks him why he is giving her attitude. Luke shifts his anger to the Frisbee on the roof. Lorelai is again puzzled by his anger over the Frisbee and tries to convince him that it isn't even her Frisbee. She asks him what the problem is and he finally he tells her what is bothering him…

Luke: I told Rory we were engaged.
Lorelai: What? How? Where?
Luke: She came into the diner last night. It was awkward and stupid. I ended up telling her we were engaged!
Lorelai: Why! Why would you do that?
Luke: Why? Because she had the face!
Lorelai: What face?
Luke: The Rory face! You know the face.
Lorelai: Yes, but Luke, you have to ignore the Rory face!
Luke: That's easy for you to say!
Lorelai: You shouldn't have told her!
Luke: Yeah. You should have told her!
Lorelai: No! She's not being told anything. So neither of us should have told her.
Luke: But if one of us isn't going to tell her more, then I'm the one that shouldn't!
Lorelai: Right! Meaning, not you! I should have told her.
Luke: Then we're in full agreement. You should have told her.
Lorelai: No, that's not what I'm saying!
Luke: But you said it and I agreed, so I win.
Lorelai: How do you win?
Luke: Because I have the high ground. That gives me the upper hand on anything you got!

Luke argues that he is caught in the middle of the conflict and that Lorelai is acting as if she is alone. She finally agrees that he is in the middle. He tells her that they are both being foolish and that they should be talking. Luke gives T.J. some much needed instruction and is exasperated when he tells Lorelai that they will be done by tomorrow. Lorelai calls to him and he tells her that they are okay. He throws the Frisbee to her and she catches it.

At the roadside, Rory is picking up garbage with her crew. One of the girls passes by her and gives her a shove. Rory behaving uncharacteristically aggressive, shoves her back and a fight ensues. Later she is in an office sitting defiantly while she gets a lecture from the director on the dangers of fighting by the roadside. The next day, Lorelai drives by Rory's crew and pulls to the side of the road. She approaches Rory. The two of them exchange some harsh words. As Lorelai leaves Rory calls…

Rory: You and Luke getting engaged and not telling me about it? You hurt me!
Lorelai: (She continues walking) Back at you!
