Lorelai and Rory are shopping for a suit for Rory's upcoming interviews with the newspapers. She is trying on suits while Lorelai tries to talk her into going on a road trip to Charlotte North Carolina to Mia's wedding. She is tempting her by talking about the great road food that is available. Rory doesn't feel she is able to go because she has so much work to do as her final semester comes to an end. She is also worried because Logan has been acting out lately; she feels he is going through something and she needs to be there for him. Lorelai continues to try to guilt Rory into going.
At Logan's apartment, Logan is at the computer looking at YouTube. Rory is heading out to the library to get some work done. She asks him if he is going into the office today but Logan is waiting for Colin and Finn to come over to hang out. Rory tells him that she is going to go to Stars Hollow but he shows little interest in anything but the computer. Mitchum knocks on the door and enters the room angry that Logan hasn't returned his many calls. Of course, Logan gives him an excuse but Mitchum is irate over his latest failure. He insists that Logan get himself into the office where his lawyers will help him to figure a way out of his latest financial disaster. When Mitchum leaves, Logan begins to denigrate his father. Rory agrees with Logan that Mitchum behaved impossibly but she adds that she agrees with Mitchum that Logan has been immature and irresponsible. Rory tells him that she loves him but will not support the irresponsible things he does. She explains that the problem isn't necessarily that his business failed but that he has run away from the problem rather than face it. She complains that he isn't rising up to his responsibilities…that people are counting on him and he is running away. Rory leaves the apartment in frustration and Logan goes back to his computer.
In Luke's diner, Zach has enthusiastically taken over Lane's duties during her pregnancy. Luke enquires as to how Lane is doing and Zach tells him she is about to burst. When he invites Luke over for dinner, Luke agrees that they should do that sometime but Zach presses him to come the next day. Luke tries to get out of it but Zach explains that he should have asked him earlier and he would be in trouble if Lane knew that he had forgotten. He tells Luke that Lane has been cooking for two days and would be so disappointed. Luke, of course, agrees to come.
Lorelai continues to help her mother with the computer programs for the corporate and personal financial statements required by their accountant. Emily is frustrated that Richard continues to avoid his work responsibilities. She is feeling over burdened by all she has to worry about. Lorela's cell phone rings. It is Rory announcing that she has decided to go on the road trip after all. Emily hears that they are going on a trip. She decides that she has to get away and invites herself along. She knows a spa in the area and decides to go there.
While driving Emily's car, the cars driving by are honking at them. Lorelai tells her to put her hazard lights on if she is going to drive so slowly. Emily explains that after she got that DUI, she can't take any chances of being stopped again. Since Lorelai is giving the toast at the wedding, Rory is helping her write a poem. It is clear that Emily is bother by the affection Lorelai and Rory have for Mia. Lorelai lowers the window to get some fresh air but Emily raises it because it is too cold. When Lorelai attempts to lower it again, they engage in the classic parent-child car battle until Emily puts the child lock on to prevent Lorelai from lowering the window again.
An extremely pregnant Lane is serving coffee after their meal. Lane and Zach are chattering away. Luke seems a little out of place but is gracious about their hospitality. They finally reveal the reason behind the invitation. The ask Luke to be godfather to the twins. Although a bit reluctant, Luke agrees.
Back on the road, the Gilmore girls are in a roadside diner. Of course, Emily is less than impressed with the facility but Rory and Lorelai enthusiastically decide to make it a seafood night. Emily orders a glass of chardonnay. She condescends to the server by describing it as the clear one. Rory notices that Emily is sensitive to the talk about Mia. When she leaves to go to the washroom, Rory suggests they refrain from talking so much about their surrogate mother/grandmother. Lorelai is a bit defensive and she says that Emily knew the reason for the trip so they should be able to talk freely about Mia. Rory expresses the hope that they can do some mother-daughter-daughter bonding. Rory worries about Lorelai and Emily after she graduates…she wants Lorelai and Emily to be close. Lorelai tells her that her relationship with her mother is very complicated but they will be fine and she shouldn't worry.
In the hotel, Emily is getting ready to leave for the spa when the phone rings. It is Mia checking to make sure they have arrived safely. When she finds out that Emily is with them, she extends her an invitation to the wedding. Lorelai attempts to make excuses for her but Mia is insistent. Rory grabs the phone from her mother and accepts on Emily's behalf. Neither, Lorelai nor Emily, is particularly enthusiastic about the prospect of Emily being at the wedding.
Luke comes down to open the diner to find Zach knocking at the door ready to work. He seems a bit distracted but insists on chatting away. Luke explains that he really doesn't like to talk too much in the mornings but Zach seems oblivious to the insinuation. He begins talking about his absentee father and begins asking Luke questions about the things he likes.
The Gilmore girls arrive at the wedding and are warmly greeted by Mia. Emily's discomfiture at being with Mia, the woman who raised her daughter and granddaughter in the early years, is masked by a thin veneer of civility. During Lorelai's toast to Mia, she is cognizant of her mother's attitude and seems to hold back a little of the true affection she feels for Mia in deference to her mother. After the toast, Rory is told that there is some to see her. She is not at all pleased to see Logan standing there…
Logan: Hey.
Rory: (Angrily) What the hell are you doing here?
Logan: I'm sorry, I don't mean to crash this. I just need to talk to you.
Rory: How did you know where I was?
Logan: I called Paris. She found the invitation. I kept trying your cell but you didn't pick up.
Rory: Well, that's the advantage of caller I.D.
Logan: I get it…your still mad…
Rory: No kidding.
Logan: …but now I'm here so you have to talk to me...that's the advantage of showing up in person. (A flirtatious smirk)
Rory: Wow, I cant believe you're still doing this. This is so last year's Logan.
Logan: What?
Rory: You think you can just fly anywhere I am and overwhelm me by just showing up…I'm just not impressed anymore by you grand gestures.
Logan: I'm not trying to impress you Rory. I just wanna tell you what I've been thinking…
Rory: Well, I don't care…
Logan: …and I want to see you.
Rory: I'm in the middle of a wedding celebration of a close friend. I don't have time to stand here and listen to you explain your stupid immature behaviour.
Logan: If you would just hear me out…
Rory: No! You go blow of steam in Vegas. You gamble away thousands of dollars. You drink all night and god knows what else. This is me, blowing off steam.
Howard comes by to tell Rory that it is time to cut the cake. He invites Logan to join them but Rory tells Howard that he has to go. Rory turns and goes back to the party without another word to Logan.
The diner is busy and Luke is getting an order from Zach. Zach is still trying to connect with Luke by talking about some music he thought Luke would like. He asks Luke whether or not he thought circumcision was a good idea. Obviously Luke is not comfortable with this topic of conversation. He tells him that it's a personal decision between him and Lane. Zach seems stressed about something but he continues trying to get Luke's opinion on different issues. Luke tells him that this probably isn't the right time for this type of discussion. Finally Luke takes Zach off to the side. He tells him that he knows he is worried about becoming a father but he will do just fine and that he just has to take it a day at a time.
Lorelai is attempting to enjoy the wedding and is chatting with one of the guests. Emily is sitting by herself on the couch and is obviously not trying to engage in any kind of social interaction. Lorelai watches as Howard approaches Emily and asks her to dance. She declines. Rory comes up and saves her mother from a rather boring conversation and tells her about Logan's arrival. Howard approaches them and asks if one of the girls would dance with him. Rory graciously accepts. As she leaves, she tells Lorelai to talk to her mother. Lorelai reluctantly goes over and sits with her mother. Emily is not engaging in the celebrations and is waiting for the opportune time to leave. Lorelai reminds her that she warned her that she wouldn't enjoy herself. Just then, an old friend from her days as a maid came by to reminisce. This pushes Emily further into her antisocial mien. She interrupts rudely to ask where the coffee is. In frustration over her mother's behaviour, Lorelai goes over to get some wine. Mia sees her and comes over to chat. Mia reminds her how difficult it must be for her mother to see Lorelai and Rory with Mia…how it must bring up some very painful memories. Lorelai finds out how Emily had come to see Mia during her visit five years ago and asked for some pictures of those early years at the Independence Inn.
Rory finally goes out to talk to Logan. He apologizes to her. He tells Rory that he apologized to his dad and quit working for him. They continue to talk while Emily and Mia look out at them from the house. Both Emily and Mia speak fondly of Rory and seem to come to a peaceful understanding. Lorelai brings Emily's coat. She gives Mia a warm hug and they say good-bye.
At the diner, Zach apologizes for his crazy behavior and gives Luke the CD he made for him. The phone rings and they find out that Lane is in labour. Zach runs around a little crazy but as always Luke is there to help. He takes Zach and Lane to the hospital.
At the motel, Emily says good night but Lorelai and Rory try to talk her into staying. Rory runs out to get some junk food as Emily looks on after her. Lorelai has reached a new understanding of the pain her mother must have experienced when she left home. Once again, she offers an olive branch to her mother…
Lorelai: Oh, I bought her a suit.
Emily: Did you?
Lorelai: Yeah. It was so fun. It was weird you know but umm…we found something really great and er it just felt like a right of passage.
Emily: I'm sure. (Emily continues to stare after Rory)
Lorelai: Made me imagine, you know, what it's going to be like…after she leaves.
Emily: Of course.
Lorelai: It's gonna be hard to be without her.
Emily: (Emily nods, still not looking at Lorelai as she speaks) Well I'm sure you'll get through it.
Lorelai: What I mean to say is, mom, I know that it was hard for you.
Emily: Well…
Lorelai asks her mother if she has seen The Pursuit of Happyness. Emily seems to thaw somewhat and show some interest in the movie. She enters the motel and sits on the bed. Rory rushes into the room, excited, announcing that Lane has had the babies. They look at the photos on her phone. The movie begins and the three Gilmore girls begin to watch.
