  • An episode that seems destined for sweeps, so why April? Rory and Paris make a last minute decision to do the Spring Break beach thing, and behave totally out of character in numerous ways. Various important character developments occur, but stupidly.moreless

    4.0
This is one of my all-time least favorite episodes. Rory and Paris once again too-coincidentally run into Madelyn and Louise (OK, so the showrunners like the actresses -- come up with a better way to use them!), who prompt bizarre occurrences such as Paris kissing Rory on the mouth just to get attention in a bar, and who provide the convenient plot element of drunk-dialing Dean and provoking a crisis in his marriage. Luke conveniently (for the writers) discovers Nicole is having an affair, so once again the writers set up a relationship that is intended to keep a romance at bay, then manipulate the character this way and that to make us hate the interloper when they need us to, then like the interloper when it has to play that way (see Tristan, see Max, see Sherry, see Logan). It's my all-time big gripe about this show I loved so much: recurring characters' behavior being continually wrenched around from one episode to the next according to how the writers needed us to feel that week toward the person. To a lesser extent it operated even with characters such as Jess. Having Luke get violent over this was annoying, and it was even more annoying when it came up in the last season as part of the whole April-Anna mess.

Jason was another character the writers toyed with mercilessly. We were mostly led to like him, then when the writers were ready to dump him for Luke, he was led precipitously to the edge to do stupid things. In this episode, though, we're still supposed to mostly like him, so he gives Lorelai a key and it doesn't go well.

It's an annoying, badly written episode all around, and I avoid it as much as possible, watching only when I watch the whole season in order, and fast-forwarding even then.moreless
  • Rory and Paris go on Spring break, Jason gives Lorelai a key. Brilliant and entertaining episode.

    9.8
This was a brilliant one. It was strange seeing Paris and Rory being so out there but was fun to watch. It was funny how Paris kept paying guys to get her more things, like a VCR, root beer and nearly everything you could think of. As always she provided a lot of the humour, it was crazy when she kissed Rory. But was hilarious when she asked what she was like, Rory was horrified, very funny.

It was good to see Madeline and Louise again, they showed the others the ropes and were funny in there own right. Them competing against the blond twins was amusing. But it gets more interesting when Rory gets drunk and tells everyone she still think Dean's attractive. Madeline calls Dean and it goes to voice mail, Rory leaves a drunken message on it.

I was happy to see Dean call back, he is so in love with Rory and he sounded pleased to here from her. As for Jason giving Lorelai the key, the scene when he did was amusingly awkward. But there still together because he tells her its because its going well. Poor Luke, Nicole is cheating on him. That's what he thinks when he wears another mans socks. It was funny that he went to jail of all people. I'm glad there over, well I'm guessing that they are. It was another sign too, he rang Lorelai to pick him up. Anyway, this was another brilliantmoreless
  • Rory goes to Florida for Spring Break with Paris.

    9.9
This was a really good episode I could hardly believe that Rory and Paris would go to Spring Break like that. They are so straightlaced. Seeing them drunk was quit interesting. The fact that they spent their first night eating pizza and watching movies instead of partying was quite surprising as well. Rory has not seemed to be the kind of girl to get drunk very often, but she is at Spring Break. Paris is Paris. Nothing really surprises me with her. She has always been kind of strange. She does change quite a bit over the course of seven seasons though. She and Rory go from enemies to really good friends, even being roommates in college. Madeleine and Louise back into the mix in this episode and hilarity is bound to ensue with them.moreless
  • Spring break, Luke goes to jail, Jason and Lorelai's relationship steps up

    9.7
Nicole is cheating Luke, he is wearing another man's socks. I felt sad for Luke but I never liked Nicole.

The spring break is there and everyone is going to the beach, Rory and Paris stay at Yale doing some protest and suddenly think of also going to the beach. And Paris is driving lol

This is Rory and Paris first experience at Spring break. That was fun to see, Paris giving money everywhere, going to the clubs, the kiss, the drinking, the clubs...

That guy was cute but like all others he was a jerk...

Jason ans Lorelai's relationship is stepping up. He gives her a key to his place, that was weird. Then that talk at her doorstep, that was important and a minute later a voice mail call makes Lorelai run out the door, Luke is in jail, Luke!!

For kicking Nicole's lover car lol

And that call for Dean was the beginning of all troubles, that what I think is going to happen...moreless
  • Rory and Paris go to Florida for Spring Break. Jason gives Lorelai a key to his place. Luke finds out Nicole is seeing someone else. Lorelai bails Luke out of jail. Luke and Nicole's relationship is over! Yippee!moreless

    9.5
It is funny to see Paris and Rory so out of their element during Spring Break. Everyone around them seems to be having fun and they feel so awkward. But then, Madeline and Louise come to their rescue and give them a taste of Spring Break life. Paris and Rory let loose a little. Paris kisses Rory! And then they head back to Connecticut feeling they experienced enough.

I love this episode. I love that Luke confides in Lorelai once again. He calls her to help him. She comes and bails him out of jail and helps him through his breakup with Nicole. now that Nicole is out of the way, Lorelai and Luke are one step closer to being together! He lets himself be so vulnerable with Lorelai. I don't think there is anyone in the world Luke could ever feel safer and more comfortable with. She is his best friend. I just want to tell Luke - it will be soon - soon, you will have the girl of your dreams!moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • When Lorelai walks into Luke's in the beginning of the episode to order coffee, you can see through the window that it is raining and everyone is using umbrellas, yet Lorelai walks in without an umbrella completely dry.

    • When Lorelai first comes in from her date with Jason and hears Luke's message, she initially ignores his plea for a ride and heads up the stairs. Once she realizes he is in jail, she turns and heads out. However, it seems a little odd that Lorelai would have even considered ignoring the call after everything Luke has done for her (fix windows, move Rory to Yale, offer to loan her money when she had termites, etc). In fact,he had just loaned her $30,000 a few weeks earlier!

    • Paris says she needs to live vicariously through Rory, which is a repeated line in the series. It was first said by Lane to Rory in episode 1.7 "Kiss and Tell."

    • When Luke kicks the car of Nicole's alleged other man, you can tell the passenger side window is completely open because Luke's fingers are able to reach inside for support.

    • If Rory is so cold after being soaked in the rain, why doesn't she put both her arms under the duvet cover?

    • When you see the first views of the club where the band is playing, you can see the back of Rory and Paris in the crowd around the band, even though they haven't arrived yet.

  • QUOTES (13)

    • Rory: So are we done?
      Paris: With what?
Rory: Spring break. Are we done?
      Paris: I don't know.
Rory: Well, let's go down the list.
      Paris: Okay, we came.
      Rory: Check.
      Paris: We danced.
      Rory: Check.
      Paris: We drank.
      Rory: Check.
      Paris: We...threw up.
      Rory: We didn't throw up.
Paris: Give us 10 more minutes.
      Rory: Right.

    • Paris: I can't be in a car if anybody else is driving, okay? If I die in a car crash, it's going to be at my own hand.

    • Lorelai: You kicked his car?
Luke: Oh, hey, I kicked it hard and over and over and over again.
Lorelai: Oh, you beat up his car.
Luke: And then, all of a sudden, these cops pull up, 'cause some busybody in the neighborhood saw some lunatic attacking a car, and, well, you know the rest.
      Lorelai: Did Nicole see you?
Luke: I don't know. I don't know what she and the sock man saw. It's just... God, I feel like such an idiot. I mean, suddenly I became like one of those guys that gets jealous and, you know, does crazy things.
Lorelai: Yeah, you weren't "like" one of those guys. You were one of those guys.
      Luke: Yeah, well...
      Lorelai: Was there any damage?
Luke: No. (gets out of the Jeep)
Lorelai: Luke... (following him) Hey, Luke, where are you going?
Luke: See? Nothing- not a scratch. Those stupid dent-resistant panels.
      Lorelai: This is the car?
Luke: Yes, this is the car. He sat there. She sat there. They got out there, walked up there. I jumped out there, ran up here, was handcuffed there, was driven off there. I went to jail. And you drove all the way up here to get me... and they are still in there!
      Lorelai: Oh, Luke.
Luke: I mean, I can't believe they're still in there. What are they doing?
      Lorelai: Luke, come on.
Luke: I know what they're doing. But even if you took one of those pills that they were hawking at the super bowl, you know, they should have been done in four or five hours, tops. I mean, that commercial said it all- "If you're still active after four hours, you should call a damn doctor.

    • Lorelai: Okay. You know what Kirk, this has been really fun, but I think we'll just hoof it the rest of the way.
Kirk: But the ride wasn't over yet.
Rory: Yeah, but we don't want to hog the cab.
      Lorelai: 'Cause there's only one.
Rory: But we'll tell our friends.
Kirk: What was wrong with the ride?
Lorelai: Nothing. I mean it's great for tourists who are new to the town and want to make sure they don't miss a thing.
Kirk: I wasn't going that slow.
Lorelai: No, you just maybe need a little more training before tourist season kicks in. You know, take a spinning class. Or buy some legs.
      Rory: Sorry.
Kirk: You will be sorry. You'll be sorry you turned down a chance to ride in Star's Hollow's first...
Rory: Now he's going to hate us forever.
Lorelai: No he's not. He's just going to hate us until something shiny comes by.
Kirk: (peddling by) Well, well well. I guess it wasn't me that was slowing things down. Guess it was my big fat cargo!
      Rory: Hey!
      Kirk: Freshman fifteen!
      Lorelai: Kirk!
Kirk: Can't wait to get my doughnut!
Lorelai: Stay away form my doughnut Kirk! I mean it! It's my doughnut.

    • Jason: Here, eat this before it gets cold.
      Lorelai: You made French toast?
Jason: Well, I had a lot of energy after my run, so...
      Lorelai: You went running?
Jason: Well, I had to wait for the laundry to dry. And I had already read the papers.
Lorelai: You had an entire day before I woke up.
      Jason: Here, you want bacon?
Lorelai: You went out and slaughtered a pig between the running and the French toast?
Jason: Yes, and by the way, that whole ozone-layer problem... taken care of.
Lorelai: You're my Green Party hero!

    • Lorelai: No falling out of windows.
Rory: Not even a first floor one.
Lorelai: And don't drink. And after you're done not drinking, drink tons of water and take two aspirin before you go to bed.

    • Lorelai: (finds Rory's swimsuit) Aha! Bathing suit. Now we just have to find the wimple that goes with it.

    • Rory: Mom, where's my bathing suit?
Lorelai: Do you even have a bathing suit?
      Rory: Of course I do!
Lorelai: When was the last time you wore it?
      Rory: I don't know.
Lorelai: Does it include rubber duckies?
      Rory: No!... I don't think.

    • Luke: (on answering machine) Hey , it's Luke. I'm sorry to be calling you like this, but I was wondering if when you get this message if you could come pick me up, 'cause I need a ride. I'm in Lichtfield, the corner of Mason and pine. It's a big white building, you'll recognize it by the police sign outside, 'cause oh hell, I'm in jail. Okay there I said it. It's a long story, I'll tell you when you get here. Thanks, if you come. Oh, one more thing I need to borrow a little money 300 bucks, it's just a loan, oh hell, it's for my bail.

    • Paris: Excuse me for thinking a banana eating contest was about eating a banana!

    • Rory: But it's spring break. It's girls gone wild and boys doing the twist!

    • Rory: Okay, forget I said 'giant Q-tips'. They're not hitting each other with giant Q-tips.
Lorelai: But now I can't get 'giant Q-tips' out of my head. It's too powerful a visual.

    • Girl: Is it raining out?
Paris: (drenched) No, it's National Baptism Day! Get your tubes tied!

  • NOTES (6)

    • German episode title: "Partylaune", meaning "In the Mood to Party".

French episode title: "Rory Au Pays Des Merveilles", meaning "Rory In Wonderland".

    • Keiko Agena (Lane), Kelly Bishop (Emily), Edward Herrmann (Richard), Yanic Truesdale (Michel), and Melissa McCarthy (Sookie) do not appear in this episode.

    • Near the end of the episode, Lorelai is wearing the exact same shirt as Cordelia Chase (played by Charisma Carpenter) wore in the Angel episode "You're Welcome", which aired a few months prior to this episode.

"So Says I" by The Shins (special appearance on the concert)
"Get Yourself Together" by Tahiti 80
"The Laws Have Changed" by The New Pornographers

    • Special musical appearance by The Shins, who did "So Says I".

  • ALLUSIONS (5)

    • Rory: He looked, he saw, he changed his mind.

This is a play on the famous quote by Julius Caesar: "veni, vidi, vici" which translates as "I came, I saw, I conquered".

    • Rory: So the person is David Caruso?

David Caruso plays Lieutenant Horatio Caine on the CBS drama CSI: Miami, which follows crime scene investigators as they examine evidence to solve crimes.

    • Lorelai:...or taking off with some surfers to find the perfect wave and not inviting me.

This quote is actually alluding to Endless Summer, a surfing documentary made in 1966 by Bruce Brown. They go all over the world in search for the perfect wave. Billabong Odyssey (2001) is about high profile big wave surfers in search for the biggest wave. Some participants in the project were the Santa Cruz boys, Layne Beachley, Shane Dorian, Brad Gerlach, and Ken Bradshaw

    • Paris: I shaved 3 hours off the Mapquest estimate.

Mapquest is an online site that gives the quickest route to wherever you are going along with an estimate of how long it should take.

    • Lorelai: You did not spend spring break with Bill Moyers!

"The Power of Myth" is a series of interviews journalist Bill Moyers conducted with renowned scholar Joseph Campbell on the role of myth in the understanding of how society functions. Think of it as a post-grad My Dinner with Andre -- exactly the sort of material that would captivate Rory and Paris.
