Episode Recap

Lorelai is at home, on the phone, talking to Emily's answering machine or so she is pretending. Emily has actually answered the phone and is trying to speak to Lorelai. Lorelai continues the charade by pretending there is something wrong with her mother's phone. She proceeds to talk over her mother as if she can't hear her. She tells her mother that something has come up and she can't come over to check out her new curtains. She hangs up the phone and cuddles with Chris. Her phone rings as Emily attempts to return her call but of course she doesn't answer it.
The next day, Lorelai is in her kitchen listening to a French language tape while dealing with her mail. Chris enters the kitchen with take-out coffee and croissants. Lorelai shows her language prowess by speaking an English phrase with a heavy French accent. Christopher picks up a notice from Yale regarding the upcoming parent's weekend. He suggests they go but Lorelai explains that only the parents who are hated by their kids go to parent's weekends. Lorelai informs him that her child likes her and she can go to Yale anytime she wants. Christopher comments on all the interesting things there will be to do and see. He seems genuinely excited about the prospect of attending. He finally convinces her to go. Just then Rory calls from Yale. She tells Rory that she and Chris are coming to parent's weekend. Rory is quite surprised by the news. They chat for a while longer until Rory reaches her
In Luke's, Kirk and Lulu are sitting at the counter. Luke is packing April's lunch while Kirk lectures him on the inappropriateness of packing a child's lunch with stinky cheese. Lulu lovingly offers Kirk a muffin and puts the butter on to his exact specification. Luke calls up to April that her ride has arrived and she runs down. He makes sure she has everything she needs for the day and she runs out to the car. Lulu kisses Kirk good-bye and wishes him a good day. When Lulu is out the door, Kirk begins complaining about how Lulu is smothering him. As Kirk blathers on, April runs in, grabs her lunch and runs back out.
In the Dragonfly kitchen, Sookie and Michel are arguing about who is in charge of the Inn when Lorelai is in France. Lorelai tells him that while she is in Paris, he is in charge of the front desk but because Sookie is a co-owner, she is the boss. After Lorelai leaves the kitchen, a new farmer brings in some free samples of his vegetables from his garden. Sookie informs him that she already has a vegetable supplier but he leaves them for her anyway. She smells them and seems impressed.
At April's swimming pool, Luke arrives to pick her up. He introduces himself to the swimming coach, Susan Bennett. They begin talking about April's progress. Coach Bennett asks Luke if she gets her natural technique from Luke but he tells her that he doesn't really swim well. She invites him to join her adult swim on Saturdays and Luke reluctantly agrees. April comes out of the locker room. When she finds out that Luke is taking swimming lessons, she finds it more than a little amusing.
Lorelai and Chris register for the parent's weekend. Chris proudly announces that they are Rory Gilmore's parents and get the program of events. Lorelai answers a call from Rory. She is busy at the paper but they arrange to meet for lunch.
At the swimming pool, Luke is taking his swimming lesson. Coach Bennett seems to be giving Luke an inordinate amount of attention compared to the other participants. When the lesson ends, she suggests Luke call her and they can go out to dinner. Luke takes her number.
At Yale, Lorelai and Chris are at the Parent's Weekend brunch. They introduce themselves to another parent who seems to know about Rory. Their son is an aspiring journalist and a fan of Rory. The father Chris is talking to begins to list all the things they have been through to get their kids into Yale. He suggests that they have earned the right to be proud. Chris realizes that he was absent for all that Lorelai and Rory went through to get her into Yale and seems to feel a little left out. Lorelai discovers that her parents are at the brunch and goes over to speak to Emily. She questions Emily as to why she is at the parent's weekend since she is not a parent. Emily informs her that they have been coming to the parent's weekends since Rory's freshman year. Richard joins Emily and Lorelai. They spar verbally for a while and Lorelai is disappointed to find out that they are taking Rory out to dinner to a fancy restaurant. Soon Chris comes along and greets the elder Gilmores. He tells Lorelai that the astronomy lecture he wants to see is about to start. Lorelai happily bids her parents good-bye.
At the astronomy lecture, Christopher is listening intently while Lorelai stews about her parents being at the parent's weekend. Lorelai is chatting rather loudly as she text messages Rory but Chris asks her to be quiet. To Lorelai's surprise Chris asks a question at the lecture.
At Luke's, Kirk informs Luke that he is breaking up with Lulu and asks him if he wants to go out and "bird-dog some chicas". Kirk rhapsodizes about the freedom Luke has…how no one cares what he does or where he goes. This revelation seems to bother Luke. As Kirk breaks into his rendition of The Righteous Brother's "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", Luke grabs Kirk by the shoulders…
Luke: Listen, you pinhead. You should be kissing the ground that Lulu walks on…why that sweet girl lets you within a hundred miles of her is beyond me…but she does. You're the luckiest man on the planet to have a girl like that looking out for you and caring about you and if you so much as say one unkind word to her I will personally break every bone in your body. (Luke smiles at Kirk and pauses briefly for effect.) You got me?
Luke doesn't wait for a response from Kirk. He walks away, grabs the sheet with coach Bennett's phone number on it and heads up to his apartment.
At the newsroom, Paris is gloating about having her article placed on the front page of the Yale Daily News. Rory is giving instruction about the layout of the day's paper. Lorelai and Christopher walk in and watch proudly as Rory competently deals with her staff. They tell Rory about all their activities. They announce that they have come to take Rory to the fancy restaurant where her grandparents were going to take her to supper. Rory introduces her parents to the staff. Chris ends up inviting the whole staff to lunch with them, much to Rory's chagrin.
At the restaurant, Chris mistakenly assumes the staff members are close friends rather that just staff. He invites them skiing and indulges them with cognac and crème brûlées. Lorelai quietly apologizes for the weirdness that has prevailed during their lunch together. Rory wonders why her dad seems to be trying so hard but admits that it is a little sweet of him and suggests that maybe the 'lame-o' parent thing is part of the quintessential college experience. Soon Rory's phone rings, it is followed by a cacophony of ringing phones of all the staffers. There is an important breaking story and Rory insists that they have to re-work the whole edition. None of them want to leave until they have their cognac and crème brûlées but Rory insists that they leave immediately.
At Luke's apartment, Luke is getting ready for his date with coach Bennett while Lane is playing chess with April. Lane is being handily beaten by April but warns her that when they play boggle she has been studying seven letter words so they will be much better matched.
Luke and his date get to the restaurant and she insists that he sit beside her instead of across from her. He complies but seems a little uncomfortable. He opens the menu to find that they are in a vegan restaurant, coach Bennett's favourite restaurant. A vegan restaurant isn't bad enough for Luke; she then asks him who would play him in a movie. Luke's look of confusion says it all. The date goes downhill from there. It is clear there will be no future between the coach and Luke.
Lorelai and Chris are chatting about the activities of the day. Lorelai gets a text message from Rory telling her that she will be working at late the paper. She gloats because she and Chris get the only meal with Rory and that Emily and Richard will miss out. Chris realizes that he messed up. He blames himself for Rory having to work late since he got the staffers drunk and distracted them from their work. He explains that he was trying to be super dad because he feels that he missed out on so much. Lorelai tries to assuage his concerns. He tells him to just be the dad he is.
At the Dragonfly, Sookie, Michel and her staff are tasting Sookie's ratatouille and raving about the freshness of the vegetables. Sookie feels guilty about using someone else's vegetables and is a bit skittish when Jackson comes into the kitchen. He has had a difficult day and she tries to hurry him out of the kitchen so he doesn't discover the errant vegetables. When he takes a piece of the ratatouille, Sookie tells him that it is a bad batch and distracts him with the promise of a romantic meal in their favourite restaurant.
Luke approaches the diner in his truck after his nightmare date with coach Bennett. As he gets out of the truck, he sees Kirk and Lulu walking hand in hand. Luke nods to Kirk. Kirk waves back and puts him arm around Lulu as they continue on.
Luke finds Lane sleeping on the couch while April is watching TV. He sits down on the couch and they discuss the date. Luke eats the leftover pizza and sits happily watching TV with April.
In the newsroom, Rory is bustling around taking care of the last minute details for the days issue. Lorelai and Chris walk in with some coffee and donuts to get them through the night. Christopher takes Rory aside and apologizes for his parental faux pas. He asks Rory if it would be okay for them to hang out and watch her get the paper out but Rory informs them that they will be late for their dinner with the elder Gilmores. Rory explains that when she called her grandparents to tell them that she had to work late, she mentioned that her parents were free. Lorelai complains that Rory was mad and that revealing Lorelai and Chris' availability was her retribution.
