Lorelai, this is your life, and this is Kirk asking you out - in two weeks. "I heard you have a cold and I think two weeks is enough to ensure the virus is out of your system."

"Great"
This week's episode starts with the three generations of Gilmore women sitting in the drawing room waiting for dinner. It's an awkward, but classic situation with Emily and Lorelai not speaking and hardly even looking at each other. Rory awkwardly tries to fill the silence in an attempt to get her mother and grandmother to speak. "Well, this is nice
all of us here together
" There is no response, Rory continues by asking about her grandfather's trip, her grandmother gives her a one line response. Desperately, Rory mentions to Emily that business is going well for Lorelai at the inn. She urges her mother to tell Emily the funny story about the mouse.
"Mouse?" Emily jumps on this and asks if the inn is clean. Lorelai assures her that the inn is clean and the small field mouse is a natural occurrence considering the inn is nestled in a woodland area. Emily is predictably irate about the mouse as a means to get to the heart of what is really bothering her - Lorelai's abrupt departure from the dinner with her parents. "You left without a word
" She says, and without skipping a beat Lorelai answers, "because I couldn't get a word in."
Having been successful at shutting her mother down for the moment, Lorelai reaches for the newspaper. Emily shoots back with a comment on how rude she's being, but Lorelai ignores her and continues to read. When her mother insists she put down the newspaper, Lorelai exclaims, "Shauna Christie shot her husband!"
"What?!" Emily is shocked as Lorelai goes into the grisly details of Shauna shooting her husband something like 33 times after catching him with the babysitter. Emily asks for the newspaper, clearly disturbed by the story of Shauna, "such a lovely girl". Lorelai thinks the whole thing is really funny but her mother admonishes her with a quick retort, "At least she had a husband to kill."
There is a brief silence in which Lorelai gives Rory a look and plasters a fake smile on her face; "This is nice
isn't it?"
Opening credits, you know, that theme song is growing on me again
and just in time too, the long awaited soundtrack to the show has been released. Now I can listen to it over and over...
When we return after the commercial break, Rory and Lorelai are seated at Luke's Diner, Lorelai is sneezing and Rory hands her a tissue. The diner is busy and Jess is working behind the counter. Lorelai is miserable and whining about her cold and the fact that it's so unoriginal, anyone can get a cold, while Rory nods sympathetically in agreement.
"I'd like a good illness. For once I'd like to say, yeah, I'm not feeling so good, my leg is haunted." Yup
that's it folks, the reference to this week's strange title - another one of Lorelai's "-isms" born out of her ramblings.
Luke arrives with their order, noting that this is the third bowl of soup in three days that Lorelai has ordered for breakfast. Lorelai thanks him for the tally and Luke lectures her about having a healthy immune system that does not include "blowing out your brain cells with coffee." He urges her to eat her carrots, when he walks away, Lorelai pushes the carrots on Rory, who comments that maturity is apparently extremely overrated in Lorelai's universe.
A mere few seconds later a girl walks into the diner and heads over to the counter where Jess is reading. It's the mystery blonde that Rory saw Jess with at the Summer Madness Festival, the same blonde slut that was glued to his face that day, the one whose butt his hands were all over. For the sake of brevity, let's just call her BS - 'blonde slut' for now.
BS leans over the counter in a blouse that is hanging off her and says, "Hey."
Jess says, "Hey." Then they start trying to swallow the other's face, while Rory and Lorelai look on in disgust.
"So?" BS says, once they come up for air.
"One sec." Jess says.
"Jess!" BS says with a kind of whiny, pouty tone.
"Relax." Jess says as he looks over to the other side of the diner where Luke must be, "I'm out!" he calls out. He catches Rory looking at him and with a nod to BS says, "Let's go."
"Ladies and gentlemen, an entire conversation in ten words or less!" Lorelai cracks.
"A real meeting of the minds, " Rory says trying to hide how much the whole encounter has bothered her. I take the time to rewind the VCR and count the words, eleven, yeah I know, obsess much?
This is about when cute Dean enters the diner and says something about already having breakfast. While Rory and Lorelai bask in the glory of his full sentences I wonder if Dean realizes that this is the second time that he has walked in on a Rory/Lorelai watching Jess/BS moment. I wonder if he ever gets that weird feeling that happens when you walk in somewhere and it seems like you have just missed an important piece of the conversation but no one bothers to fill you in. Then I bask in the glory of Dean. Unfortunately full sentences are not enough to warrant another appearance in the episode from Cute Dean. I cherish the thirty seconds and remember an interview I read with Jared Padalecki regarding this season, where he said that the writers were going to explore another side to Dean's character, hopefully they'll do it soon.
The next scene is back at the inn where Lorelai and Michel are peering into the fireplace. Lorelai asks if Michel has called an exterminator, Michel with customary sauce replies, "Why no, what a wonderful idea! I was actually going to fasten a large wedge of cheese to my forehead and lay on the ground until Mickey gets hungry and decides to snack on my face."
Kirk comes in with a delivery - Sookie's wedding pictures. He tells Lorelai he has to talk to her and asks her to sit down. Lorelai sits, not really sure what is going on. Kirk starts off by telling Lorelai that they've known each other for a while now and that their social and business interactions have been pleasant. While Lorelai waits expectantly, Kirk says, "I was just wondering if you would like to have dinner with me."
"Oh." Lorelai says, the full impact of the words finally hitting her.
"In two weeks." Kirk says. Lorelai looks puzzled and Kirk explains that he has heard that she has a cold and two weeks should be enough time to ensure the virus is out of her system. He tells her that she doesn't have to give him an answer right away and asks her to take a few days to think about it. Before she can protest, he says, "You're the prettiest girl I've ever seen, aside from a really filthy magazine." He leaves and Lorelai turns around to see Michel standing there. She warns him to keep his mouth shut and he insists that he is not doing anything but informs her that the mouse has died from laughing.
The next morning, Rory awakes to find her mother sitting in a chair at the edge of her bed watching her. Lorelai fills her in about Kirk and Rory laughs then asks how they will let him down nicely. Lorelai grumbles as Rory continues to tease her about marrying Kirk. Lorelai suggests running away and living under a new alias. Rory reminds her of the swearing in ceremony at her school for the newly elected student government. She tells Lorelai not to be late and then tells her to be prepared because Emily will also be attending the ceremony.
Later at Chilton, Lorelai arrives and Rory asks her to save a seat for Emily. Lorelai sits and reluctantly puts her purse on the seat next to her. After a second thought, she removes the purse, then puts it back, then removes it and is about to put it back when Emily arrives. She sits next to Lorelai and rebukes her; "You could have put your handbag there to save the seat." Lorelai sighs. The ceremony is long and after it is over, Emily and Lorelai stand in the hallway waiting for Rory. When Rory arrives they both congratulate her and she leaves to retrieve her books before going home with Lorelai. Emily starts to walk away and then asks Lorelai if she will have lunch with her the next day. Lorelai tries to get out of it but fails and agrees to meet her mother at Luke's for lunch.
At the first meeting of the new student body government, Paris is walking around the table spouting her agenda for the coming year when Rory alerts her that time is almost up. Before the meeting is adjourned, Francie, the senior class president, says that she has an issue that she would like to bring up. The issue is skirt hemlines. Paris is not impressed and tells her that she will think about it. When the other members at the meeting leave, Rory suggests to Paris that she has missed the purpose of the first meeting - a casual get-together to bond over coffee and donuts. But Paris has other things on her mind, like getting rid of the librarian, and asks Rory to read over her draft letter to the administration. There is no mention of the date with Princeton man, which I was hoping might be addressed this week. Looks like I'll have to wait.
Back at the inn, Lorelai and Sookie discuss vegetarian menus and the lunch date Lorelai has with Emily. Lorelai considers bailing on the lunch but Sookie tells her she can't do that, Lorelai grumbles that this goes against everything in her "Gilmore Survival Guide" which includes rule # 3: "Never have lunch alone with the mother."
Back in the halls of Chilton, Rory is yanked into the bathroom by one of Francie's cronies. It seems that Francie is less than impressed with Paris' dismissal of the hemline issue and wants Rory to know about it. She threatens Rory, calling her the "Meyer Lansky", Rory is understandably miffed at the comparison to the "mogul of the mob", but Francie tells her to shut-up until she has finished talking. She threatens to make Paris' life miserable and mentions her affiliation with the Puffs (it sounded like "puffs", if anyone heard different, let me know) an exclusive and very popular girl's club that can make Rory and Paris' lives miserable. Ahhhh,
the joys of high school.
At Luke's diner, Lorelai awaits the arrival of her mother. Luke teases her about her date with Kirk and admits that he knows because Kirk confided in him. Luke tells Lorelai that he is the one that encouraged Kirk to ask Lorelai out and starts singing, "Love is in the air
" As he walks away, Lorelai throws a fork at him just as her mother enters the diner. Emily sits down after wiping the seat first and looks at the menu. She asks Lorelai about the Caesar salad but Lorelai is more interested in why Emily has asked her to lunch. Luke comes back to take their order and once he leaves, Emily announces that she has talked to Christopher on the phone. Lorelai is horrified and tells her mother that she had no right to do that, but her mother insists that somebody had to do it. Emily tells Lorelai that Christopher is not happy with the way things turned out but Lorelai refuses to listen to another word and walks out of the diner.
In the next meeting of the student body, Francie asks Paris if she has had time to think about the hemline issue. Paris brushes her off and Francie throws a threatening look at Rory. When the meeting is adjourned, Rory convinces Paris to push the hemline issue through saying that making the senior class happy would not only garner their support in other issues but also make Paris a president that is beloved as well as respected. Paris agrees and Rory breathes a sigh of relief.
Back at the Gilmore house, Rory and Lorelai are getting ready for dinner at Emily's. Lorelai is still fuming over her mother's meddling ways and Rory tries to comfort her by saying that Emily means well. Just as they are about ready to leave, the phone rings and the answering machine picks up, it is Kirk. Obviously confused by the answering machine he hangs up and calls again. Rory laughs at Lorelai as they listen to Kirk; halfway through his message his mother picks up the phone. Lorelai sighs and follows her daughter out the door.
The best is saved for last and the pivotal events of the season two finale are finally confronted in the last two scenes of the episode. At the dinner, Christopher walks in. Lorelai immediately accuses her mother of having something to do with Christopher's entrance but Emily denies it and Christopher tells Lorelai that he knew she would be here. They leave the dining room arguing and Lorelai tells Christopher that he has no business being there. Christopher confronts her about all the unanswered phone calls and tells her that they have to talk about what has happened. Lorelai refuses to talk and Christopher accuses her of influencing Rory to freeze him out. Lorelai denies this and Rory rushes in to defend her mother.
Rory is very upset and reminds Christopher that he promised her at Sookie's wedding that things were going to be different. Christopher asks her to understand and Rory yells that she is tired of being "understanding". She refuses to listen to him and walks away asking her mother to let her know when her father has left. Christopher wants to go after her but Lorelai stops him saying that he has to respect Rory's need for time. Christopher tells her that he cannot understand why they are where they are and tells Lorelai that he does not want things to be this way. Lorelai reminds him that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant and that he is still with her and plans to marry her and that is why they are at this point. But Christopher presses the issue and Lorelai tells him that she cannot talk about this anymore, that talking about it is killing her. Before she can continue, Emily appears and asks Christopher to leave, Christopher protests, but Emily is firm. Christopher leaves and Lorelai thanks her mother. Emily smells something burning and runs to the kitchen while Lorelai runs out the door to catch Christopher before he leaves. Before he rides away on his motorcycle, she tells him to "give it time".
The final scene of the episode shows Lorelai and Rory walking home. Lorelai tells Rory not to be too hard on her father and Rory tells her that she is sick of him bailing on them. She tells Lorelai that she is not going to his wedding, but Lorelai tells her that she may change her mind when she's not so angry. They decide to stop by the grocery store and pick up some snacks. Before they can go in Kirk appears and Lorelai urges Rory to go in and let her handle Kirk.
Kirk wants to know if Lorelai is allergic to tuna, she tells him she is not and then tells him that she has made up her mind about the date. Lorelai tells him that they are friends and that she has just gotten out of a weird relationship and she is not ready to date. Kirk is disappointed and asks if she would like his mother to call her, but Lorelai tells him that is not necessary. Kirk respects her decision and says that he is glad that asked her.
Meanwhile inside the grocery store, Rory runs into Jess. He tells her that the name of the girl he's seeing is Shane and Rory is not happy. When Jess asks her what her problem is she tells him that she thought that after what happened at Sookie's wedding that things would be different. Then Jess tells her off. He reminds her of how she kissed him and then told him not to say anything about it, how she went away to Washington for the whole summer and never once called or wrote him a letter, and then expected him to wait for her "like Dean would". Then he asks her if she is still with Dean, at first Rory does not answer but when Jess asks her again she says that she is with Dean and then walks away from him.
When Rory gets outside, Lorelai is waiting for her. "I was about to come in after you. All done?"
"Oh yeah, I'm done." Rory says angrily clutching the groceries. She walks quickly while her mother trots to keep up with her. The camera swings away and up and the end music plays.
