Episode Recap

This episode opens with the funeral services for Stan. Rory is weeping. Rory, Lorelai and Sookie share some fond memories of the dearly departed including how cute he was wearing his fedora and hush puppies everyday, and how he came to the inn every Tuesday for lunch even though he couldn't eat dairy, salt or meat and would end up with just a plain salad. Lorelai and Sookie decide to hold Stan's lunch reservation at the Dragonfly in his honor. The discussion turns to how in Stars Hollow death comes in fives and Stan is the fourth that year, who will be next? The three look around the room picking candidates and narrating impromptu eulogies. Apparently Stan's last wish was to have the church bells, which have been broken for the last 20 years, restored and he left funds for the repairs.

Lorelei's Garage- Hep Alien practices. Lane, Brian and Gil declare that the song they just played was perfect. Zack thinks that they were too on the beat and sound too fake and computerized and worries that they will end up sounding like N'Sync.Gil walks out of the garage to take a call. Zack is still giving Gil a hard time, Lane and Brian tell Zack to lighten up. Gil runs back into the garage and announces that the band booked a gig at CBGB's.

Rory and Lorelai walk the snowy streets of Stars Hollow, they have missed celebrating the first snow of the year together. The first snow, Rory had a Philosophy final. The second was on a Wednesday, and the Third, was Sat in the middle of the night, making the current snow the fourth. Rory asks why Lorelai didn't call her about the first snow. Lorelai says because it was in the middle of the night and says if she called Rory to tell her to drive 20 miles to stand in the snow in the middle of the night the would have to take the craziest mother/daughter title from Judy (Garland) and Liza (Minelli) and award it to them. The church bells ring out, all the towns people come into the street to applaud the bells. Lorelai heads to Luke's for coffee and Rory heads to Lanes.

Kim's Antiques- Lane is holding a meeting with her fellow classmates from her Seventh Day Adventist College; Andy, Sara, Jill, Marla and Jordan. They are trying to decide who to interview, it is unclear for what. The other classmates suggest pastors from the college and Lane suggest sending a letter to Bill Clinton which is met with confusion from her classmates. The Pastor always does the interview. Rory arrives and Lane introduces her to the others. Rory and Lane go to Lane's room and Rory opens the book she borrowed from Lane, Marty's Room, to reveal that the book is hollowed out and there is a cd hidden inside. Rory borrows another Cd from the New Pornographers. Lane asks Rory's help coming up with an alibi so she can go to the gig at CBGB's. She hasn't gotten farther than "Mama, may I run something past you?" Lane has yet to come up with an excuse, but says "not to worry, my entire life had been a training session for this very event." Mrs. Kim comes into Lane's room and tells her that her classmates are waiting. Rory leaves.

Yale - Rory and Paris walking and talking. They are on their way to a meeting of the International Relations Association, which Paris had convinced Rory to attend. William, the boy Rory asked on a date in the laundry room, enters after Rory and Paris. William glances at Rory, Rory looks embarrassed.

Luke's Diner - Kirk is sitting at the counter. Luke is leaning over the counter pouring over paint chip samples. The two are arguing because Kirk keeps asking the time.Lorelai enters and demands coffee in a big cup. The three discuss the church bells. Kirk say he stood to close to the bells and now has a persistent ringing in his ears. The doctor told Kirk he has tinnitus, which Kirk looked up on the web at celebritieswhoshareyourdisease and apparently shares the affliction with William Shatner. Luke complains about the church bells, Lorelai is still enchanted with the bells and equates them to the beauty of sunsets the moon and stars . Lorelai asks Luke what the paint chips are for and is upset when Luke tells her they are for his new apartment wit Nicole in Litchfield where he moved to three weeks ago. Lorelai is dumbfounded that Luke hadn't mentioned the move and takes it as a betrayal of their friendship.

Lorelai: "No, were not friends! Freinds tell each other the most basic things like where you live and when you moved away! I thought we were friends. But, I guess, we're not."

Lorelai leaves the diner upset and Luke shouts after her.

Yale, dining hall - Rory and two girls rifle through a care package. One of the girls notices William at a vending machine and the girls (except Rory,) discuss his cuteness. T a recent party, William shared a story about a girl who comes up to him and asks him on a date. He says no and now thinks the girl is stalking him. Rory is very quiet and embarrassed because she thinks the story is about her encounter with William in the laundry room.

Lorelai's house- Sookie and Davie are visiting and Lorelai and Sookie are discussing Luke's move. Davie starts to cry in anticipation of the church bells. Lorelai spots Luke shoveling her driveway. Lorelai goes to make nice with Luke but they get in another fight. Luke tells Lorelai that it is none of her business if he wants to move in with Nicole and that he doesn't have to tell her anything. He tells her to shovel her walk and Lorelai yells FINE!" Luke storms off and Lorelai goes back into the house.

Yale, Meeting of the International Relations Association. Paris is arguing a point. Rory drops her pencil, it rolls across the table and William picks it up. William argues Paris's point and Rory jumps in to the discussion to slam William using her personal feelings about him as fuel.Rory calls William an idiot and William says to Rory, "You know, you didn't look scary when you came in here." Rory angrily demands that he give her back her pencil.

Lorelai at home on the couch talking to Rory on the phone at Yale in her dorm room - Lorelai is in a stubborn mood and starving because she refuses to go to Luke's for dinner and shoots down Rory's suggestions of other Stars Hollow eateries. Rory tells Lorelai that she is acting like a four year old and that she and Luke will make up like they always do. Rory tells Lorelai she has to go study.

Night - Main Street Stars Hollow. Lorelai has broken down and gone out for food. The church bells are ringing loudly and people are shouting at them to shut up. Lorelai watches Luke from outside the diner. She goes into the diner and asks him to help her break the bells. Luke goes up to his apartment to get his toolbox, Lorelai grabs a donut and follows. The apartment is a mess, unmade bed, dirty dishes in the sink and on the table.

CBGB'S - Hep Alien waits to perform . Lane is pumped running around the room, Gil is checking out all the names graffited on the walls by previous performers, Brian is nervously trying to tune his guitar, and Zack is uber cranky yelling at everyone. Darryl the booker from CBGB's comes in to tell the band they have been bumped because there are only two people in the audience. (They turn out to be Brian's parents.) Lane insists on playing but Darryl won't let them. As Darryl leaves to have a cigarette Lane screams, "Get cancer Darryl!" The rest of the band argues.

Stars Hollow Church - Luke and Lorelai break into the church. Lorelai asks Luke what the game plan is and Luke shares an extensive knowledge on how to break church bells which he knows because he is the one responsible for breaking them 20 years ago. Lorelai grills Luke about the mess in his apartment and wonders why he says he moved when all of his stuff is still there and he has obviously spent the night recently.Luke again tells her it's none of her business.

Lorelai: It's absolutely my business!

Luke: How?

Lorelai: Because. I wasted a week of my life adjusting to the idea that you had moved, only to find out that you haven't moved.

Luke: How much adjusting did you have to do? Nothings changed. I still see you everyday. I still cook your food, I still serve your coffee. What so you care?

Lorelai: I care.

Luke: Why?!

Lorelai: Because I don't want you to move.

Luke: Why, Why don't you want me to move?

As Lorelai gives Luke an exhausted look, rolling her eyes, Reverand Skinner comes in. Realizing they are there to break the bells the Reverand is relieved and leaves, telling Luke and Lorelai to carry on.

Rory's dorm room, middle of the night - There is a knock on the door. Rory goes to answer grumbling about it being 4 in the morning. Lane is at the door, she didn't ask her mom if she could go to the gig and now she is afraid to go home. Rory insists that Lane call her mom but Lane says she can't. Rory calls Lorelai who calls Mrs. Kim. Mrs. Kim answers the phone, obviously worried, in the background we see a prayer vigil, a policeman, and several fireman. Lorelai tells Mrs. Kim that Lane is ok and at Rory's dorm and promises the girls will stay put. She gives the dorm address to Mrs. Kim who heads out to pick up Lane. On the way, Mrs. Kim stops to tell Luke that Lane won't be into work but Luke already knows because Lane has called him. Mrs. Kim is hurt that Lane would call Luke and not her and does not go to Rory's dorm to get Lane.

The next morning at Yale, Lane and Rory walk and sip coffee. Lane can't believe that her mother didn't show up in the middle of the night, kick down the door, and douse the place in holy water. Lane is even more afraid now that she hasn't received the expected response from her mother. Lane decides to head home.

Yale, dining hall- Rory grabs a tray and spots William sitting at a table by himself. William shouts, "hey, it's Madeleine Albright," as Rory walks by. Rory turns to confront William and tells him she doesn't appreciate him talking to her or about her at all. Rory accuses William of telling the "hilarious laundry room incident story," and tells him not to tell it to anyone, anywhere ever again. Proud of herself, Rory turns to leave but William tells her his story isn't about her. There was a girl who really was extreme and had hid in his closet wearing nothing but whipped cream. Now truly embarrassed, Rory asks William not to share the story of her telling him off either and leaves.

Kim's Antiques - Mrs. Kim solemnly wanders into Lanes room and sits on the bed. She notices a loose floorboard and lifts it, finding one of Lane's secret hiding places filled with cd's. Lane comes home to find her mother in her room, and most of her hiding places found, her secret stashes stewn about the room. Mrs. Kim asks Lane if she found everything, and Lane reveals one last hiding place. Lane apologizes, for lying and keeping secrets. She reveals that she has been hiding things in her room ever since she was six and her mom told her that cookie monster was one of the seven deadly sins - gluttony. Lane is very emotional but somewhat relieved that her mother has found out. Lane asks her mother to accept that she has other interests and to let her play with the band and she will continue to go to college and stick to her curfew on the nights the band doesn't have a gig. Mrs. Kim says that children don't make the rules and that Lane can move out if that's how she wants to live her life.

Lorelai on her cell at Weston's Bakery talking to Rory at Yale in her dorm room. Rory had just retold the William story and Lorelai says she has handled the situation well and if the redi whip girl is still hanging around Rory shouldn't be too embarrassed. Rory comments that it's four o'clock and the bells should be ringing. Lorelai doesn't share her vandalization story and just says they haven't been working all day. There is a knock on Rory's door, she is surprised to find Lane with her suitcase.
