Episode Recap

We see everything in Lorelai's living room covered with plaster. Lorelai sits cross-legged in a chair, looking at paint colors with Paul Anka next to her while Luke paces. Lorelai tells Luke he's distracting and says maybe she should do this alone. Lorelai tells him, "I need to be alone with my thoughts." Luke responds, "The last time I left you alone with your thoughts, I came back and you were in the reds again."He reminds her they ruled out red because she doesn't like it. Lorelai agrees and says she needs total silence to concentrate. Luke agrees, then asks ten seconds later what all of her shoes are doing downstairs. Lorelai tells him Paul Anka brought them all downstairs. Luke picks them up and puts them back down and him and Lorelai argue more about colors. Lorelai says none of the colors go with Paul Anka, and Luke bluntly tells her the guys are almost done on the house and they'll leave if they don't have a color to paint with when they're ready to paint.
Lorelai then asks Paul Anka's opinion and gets excited when he licks the dark magenta. Luke points out dogs are colorblind and Lorelai says Paul Anka picked dark magenta again for base boards. Luke announces he needs a beer and stands up. Lorelai says one for her too and then asks Paul Anka what for the ceiling. He once again picks dark magenta. Lorelai praises, "You've got the queer eye, my friend."

Rory is lying in bed when Emily knocks on the door and brightly calls, "Rise and shine!" Rory mumbles, "No rising. No shining." Emily momentatrily leaves and Rory puts a pillow over her head.

Lorelai is still talking about colors as she and Luke come into the diner, but this time she's talking about painting his apartment. Luke bluntly says no, and Lorelai asks why, and he tells her they don't have time to paint everyone's house or building, and then threatens to take the paint samples away. Lorelai tells Luke the painters won't know what to do, and Luke declares, "It's the Twilight Zone. I don't know what to do here." Lorelai draws his attention to a woman with two scared-looking girls standing behind Luke.
The girls introduce themselves and then tell him they go to Star's Hollow middle school, where Luke went. The girls tell Luke they're on a soccer team and that they need a sponsor for their team. Luke hesitates, and the girls hurriedly tell him he just has to buy their jerseys which'll say Luke's Diner on the back, but he doesn't have to come to the games. Luke politely refuses, and the woman with the girls says it's okay and her and the girls sit at a table. Lorelai tells Luke he broke the girl's hearts, and he says he doesn't want to coach a soccer team. Lorelai points out that's not what they wanted, and Luke responds, "Kids talk, but they don't usually say anything." Lorelai and Luke go back and forth before Luke finally says, "I warned you" and snatches Lorelai's paint sample booklet. Lorelai begs for it back and when she gets it back, Luke asks, "Think they're any good?" Lorelai tells him that doesn't matter. Luke goes over to the girl's table and says he'll do it. When he does, the girls jump up and hug Luke tightly while Lorelai holds up the blue sample "for the jerseys."

Rory is walking down the stairs talking on the phone to Logan, who convinces her to go out tonight. Rory tells him Emily is coming and says she's sure there are at least five Emily's roaming around. Logan whispers they'll meet at eight, and says he's whispering because she is. She tells him it's cute, hangs up the phone, and almost makes it out before Emily catches her. Emily asks her where she's going and if she's staying at Paris' house that night. She then tells her she can't make dinner with Emily, and attempts to leave before Emily brings out a dress for a Russian D.A.R. event. She urges Rory to try it on, who says once again that she really has to go. Finally, Rory escapes Emily and makes it out the door.

Babette is sitting in Lorelai's living room trying to pick a paint color. Babette says she can't even choose between cantalopes, and Lorelai urges her to pick a color because the painters will leave if they don't have a color ready. Luke yells to not listen to Lorelai from upstairs and Babette says she has to pick a color. Luke says Lorelai and has to pick a color and she's being cruel to Babette and will rot in hell for it. Babette gives Lorelai some stuff for Paul Anka and says he's the cutest basket case she's ever seen. Lorelai quietly asks her one more paint question and Luke yells "STOP IT!" from upstairs, and Lorelai remarks, "My god, he's got good ears."
Luke is ordering jerseys when Lorelai comes in. He says he wants his girls to looks good, and Lorelai remarks, "Listen to Daddy Warbucks." Lorelai pokes Luke to order one for her and Luke and Paul Anka as well as for the team. Lorelai says Luke's embraced it, and he says it's fun and the team can go all the way. Lorelai tells him when they make a movie out of it, Tobey MaGuire should play Luke. Luke says he's too young, and that Viggo Morgenstern should be him. Lorelai tells him it's Viggo Mortensen. She suggests Donald Sutherland, who Luke says has jowels. They notice Paul Anka trying to get past a door when Luke calls back and orders caps for the soccer team. Lorelai ruffles Paul Anka's fur as Luke orders the highest-quality caps.

Rory, Logan, Colin, Finn, and others are listening and insulting a folk singer in a club. Logan, Colin, and Finn are drunk when Logan comes up with a new drinking game. Rosemary remarks to Rory, "Buckle up. It's gonna be a long night."
All three guys are drunk when they come out of the club. Finn starts shouting when a man yells, "Shut up!" Finn replies, "God has spoken to me! Rather rudely." Rory, helping Logan to the car, tells Finn to keep it down when Colin throws a beer bottle in the air and it crashes on the street. Logan asks why they're leaving and Rory tells him it's because the club is closing. Rory tries to get Colin and Finn in the car when Logan takes off toward the door of the club. Finn happily calls, "We've got a runner!" as Rory runs after him. He says he has to apologize to the folk singer for hurting her feelings and Rory tells him she's used to it. Logan moans about going to Omaha and Rory has to force him into the car when she realizes Colin and Finn have escaped. She leaves her drunk boyfriend in the car and goes to get his drunk friends back.
Rory pulls into the driveway of Emily's house and has just gotten out of her car when she hears the gate open. She turns around and sees none other than Jess coming through the gate. The two shyly say hey.

Rory asks Jess what he's doing here and he tells her he's a professional driveway stalker. He says he really is in town on business. Rory asks how he knew where she was and he says he got the information out of Luke. She tells him he looks good, and he says she does too. Jess tells Rory he wants to show and tell her something, and says he can come back if it's not a good time. She says they're exposed because Emily's window is right above them. She tells Jess to be quiet as they go in, for Emily is a very light sleeper.
When Rory and Jess get into Rory's room, she puts a pillow in front of the door so their voices don't carry and says the room
isn't her taste. Jess asks what the dress is for and she says it's a for a D.A.R. function. She explains her and her mom aren't speaking and she had been in the poolhouse, but she had to move into the main house and mentions it's all temporary. Jess asks why she's not living on campus and she says she's taking time off from Yale. She asks what Jess is up to, and he says he's in Philadelphia and says the art scene is big there. Rory says she heard about that, ad Jess gently asks her if she's nervous. She admits she is, and he tells her he is too. He then tells her he has to show her something and takes a book out of his bag. Rory is surprised to find Jess' names on the cover. She exclaims delightedly, "You wrote a book?" He says some publishers liked it and published it and he says he going around begging bookstores to stock it and says a few have. Rory excitedly asks where and says she wants to see it in a bookstore. She tells him she's going to put it in the staff recomendation sectiona and praises Jess for writing the book. He says he works at the press and that it's fun and Rory asks if he'll write a sequel, then pauses, thinking she heard Emily. Jess stands up and tells her he wanted to show it to her and say he couldn't have done it without her. He then asks if they can talk again, and they agree to dinner the following night. Jess tells her to keep the copy of his book. When he leaves, Rory sits down on her bed and opens his book.

Lorelai and Luke are at the soccer game. Lorelai asks where the bleachers are, and says there's a good crowd at the game. The coach comes up and is excited to see Luke came. Megan and Tilly, the two girls from the diner, are also happy Luke came to the game. Lorelai tells Luke she took Paul Anka to doggy daycare and says she thinks it'll do him good. Lorelai is very confused as to what is going on when Megan slams her elbow into another girl's neck. Lorelai and Luke are horrified to see the coach encouraging the girls tackling each other, and finds it's all the team Luke sponsored.
Luke and Lorelai run back to the car where Lorelai says it was "Scarface on a soccer field." The two are very stunned by the violence the little girls did on the other team. Lorelai and Luke decide they don't want to go to another game, then hurriedly drive away.

Jess is outside Emily's house and taking stones out of the fountain and throwing them at Rory's window. Rory comes out the door and asks what he's doing. He says he didn't know if it was okay to come up to the door and Rory says Emily's not home. Jess and Rory are just deciding where to eat when Logan pulls into the driveway. Rory says she thought got back tomorrow and he says he thought he'd surprise her. Rory introduces him to Jess, and babbles about how grown up she sounded because Logan and Jess aren't saying anything. They finally shake hands and Rory tells Logan they were going out to eat. Logan says they can all go together. Logan puts his arm around Rory and tells Jess to follow them in his car.

Lorelai enters her house and finds her shoes all strewn out, leading to Paul Anka, lying in the hall.

The Bobcats are celebrating their victory when Luke is trying to tell the girls that they played too rough, but he hits a nerve when he says that they should play like girls. Tilly says they have to kick some butt, and Luke remarks, "You were so shy when I met you." The phone rings and Luke answers it and Lorelai says Paul Anka is sick and she says he's never been sick. Luke says he got sick when he ate chocolate, and Lorelai says he hasn't eaten in two days. Luke promises he'll be there when the team leaves, which hopefully won'tbe that long.

Logan is telling Jess about their life and the restaurant they're inwhen Jess says the restaurant is fine, and Logan says not to come on folk night. Jess says he doesn't like folk music, and Logan says that's one thing they have in common. Logan tries to get a waitress' attention and Rory asks Jess what he wants, but Jess say he's not hungry. Logan pushes Jess that he and Rory had been going out to eat, and Jess reluctantly tells him he'll get a burger and pay for it himself when Logan says he'll pay. Logan pushes Rory and Jess about their relationship and Rory says they dated and Logan tries to dig deeper, but Rory stops him, so he moves on to what Jess does. Rory tells him Jess wrote a novel, and he asks how long it is by throwing out names of famous authors, and it's clear at this point it's taking all of Jess' willpower not to punch Logan in the face. Logan mockingly says he should write down his conversations and have them published, then tells Jess to send him a copy. Jess replies, "Where do I send it? The blond dick at Yale?" He stands up and walks out and Rory stands up. Logan tells Rory to forget about Jess, and she tells him not to follow her. Rory catches up with Jess outside and Jess bluntly tells her Logan's a jerk and asks what is up with Rory. He says this isn't her, living at her grandparent's house and not in Yale. He says it's not Rory and Rory admits she doesn't know what's going on with her. Jess says, "Maybe we'll catch up at...at a better time." He starts to walk away and turns around and says happy belated birthday. When he's gone, Rory goes back into the restaurant to say a few things to Logan.

Rory tells Logan Jess left and that he was a jerk and he says not to let Jess get to her and Rory says it's him, not Jess who's getting to her. She says he's mocking Jess' life and he says everybody is doing something, and Rory says she isn't, being at Emily's house and in the D.A.R. Logan furiously stands up and says he can't blame her for their drinking and partying. She says it's all he does, and he says it's his perogative. And he says his life is over come June, and Rory retorts he has doors opened for him. Logan says that one door is opened and he's being pushed through it and Rory says he's not fighting it. He says it was her who quit Yale and she can't blame him and she should just go off with Jess. Logan then says they should go, and Rory says she's not leaving. Logan puts money on the table and storms out.

Emily knocks on Rory's door in the morning. When she doesn't answer, she opens it and finds Rory's not there.

Luke wakes up and finds Lorelai's not in bed and goes into Rory's old room and sees Lorelai in there with Paul Anka. Lorelai says she's worried and kept coming back and put his jersey on and Luke tells her he'll be okay. Lorelai goes on to say he was trying to tell her something with the shoes and she didn't listen and shouldn't have socialized him with Kirk's dogs. She goes on to say she's a bad mother and Luke denies this and asks if she slept at all. He tells her to stay home that morning and that Paul Anka will be okay.

Rory is at Lane's in the morning and thanks her for letting her crash at her place. Lane tells her Emily left a message on her phone, so Rory runs to the D.A.R. function.

At the function, Emily tells Rory she has to talk to her. Rory says she can't talk to her now and Emily pushes her with where she was the night before and why she's not wearing her dress. Emily argues that she was needed and that everyone was looking for her. Rory retorts that she shouldn't have gone through her address book and Emily tells Rory she's grounded. Rory says she can go wherever, whenver and she's been sleeping at Logan's when she says she's been at Paris'. Emily says they'll go over house rules when her father returns, and Rory tells her it's her grandfather. Rory says she'd have to be living at the house to have house rules, then walks away from Emily as the balalaikas play.
