Lorelai and Rory start the day at Luke's with coffee and muffins. Conversation starts with how almost talkative Luke is being with his other customers and quickly moves around to whether he's been dating anyone. The answer is inconclusive.
Next we see Lorelai, her car won't start. While she's on the phone with Michel trying to bribe her way to a ride to work, she and Rory argue over whether Rory actually needs to bring to school two books to read on the bus and another three for lunch. Rory's lunchtime reading is interrupted this day by a school guidance counselor. She and the headmaster have been watching Rory and have decided that she's a bit of a loner who needs to be brought out of her shell. Rory protests that she's not a loner; loners are weird guys with long coats and mysterious duffel bags. But the counselor still insists that she be more social at school. While fixing Lorelai's car, Kirk points out that he was a loner with a duffel bag in high school and he turned out all right, but Lorelai still makes a trip to see the headmaster, to tell him off for interfering with Rory's individuality. The headmaster turns the situation around on Lorelai, telling her to be more involved with Chilton parents groups to set a good example for Rory.
To remedy the situation, Rory forgoes her usual lunchtime reading and sits instead at a table with a group of girls who turn out to be THE secret society at Chilton, a group Paris has been trying to break into. Unfortunately, once the girls decide that both Rory and Paris are their kind of people, the initiation rite turns out to be breaking into the headmaster's office and ringing a bell while reciting some lines about loyalty. This is when security busts up the party. Rory gets off easy when she reminds the headmaster that she got there by following his advice.
Lorelai's Chilton involvement also plays out with interesting consequences. She joins the booster club just in time to help plan the fall fundraising event, a fashion show. The show is held at the inn, Sookie caters the event and Lorelai and Emily are a smash hit as a mother-daughter twin set. Luke even shows up to help build the runway and sticks around for the main event. He catches the eye of one of the other moms and when Lorelai sees the two talking later, she jumps to conclusions. She asks Luke not to date any Chilton moms, but he tells her his dating life is none of her business -- then adds that he had only been giving the woman directions home.
