Lorelai discovers cats on her porch while she picks up her newspaper. She immediately calls Rory to tell her that the cats have found out about her break up with Jason. Rory tries to comfort her by reminding her that she is stressed out over the preparations for the opening of the Dragonfly but Lorelai is inconsolable. They hang up with Lorelai declaring a need for yarn balls.
Lorelai is having difficulty sleeping because of the stress and Luke finds her on the steps of the diner at 5:00 a.m.. He helps her into the diner and as always, he is there to help her first with coffee and then with a healthy breakfast of oatmeal. Needless to say, Lorelai rejects the offer of oatmeal but Luke promises to come to see the Inn if she eats her oatmeal. She reluctantly complies.
When Luke comes to see the Dragonfly, Lorelai takes him to see the kitchen where they bump into Sookie. She is talking to Shel Sausman her poultry supplier who, incidentally, was just divorced. Sookie makes a hasty retreat so that Lorelai and Shel can talk. Realizing that the meeting is a feeble attempt to set her up, Lorelai calls Luke to her aid. Behaving rather flirtatiously she says…
Lorelai: Shel, have you met Luke? Hey, Luke...Get up! Uh, Shel, this is Luke.
Shel: Nice to meet you.
Luke: Yeah, you too.
Lorelai: Luke is my...special friend.
Lorelai: I have to tell you, renovating this place has been a real nightmare. I just don't know how I would have gotten through it without him. [Lorelai leans against Luke and forces him to put his arm around her waist.] Have I said thank you to you recently?
Lorelai: Oh. Well, thank you.
Luke: You're welcome.
Lorelai: Well, it was nice meeting you both. I'm just gonna go say goodbye to Sookie.
Lorelai: Oh. Bye, Shel.
Lorelai then confides in Luke that she has just broken up with Jason and asks why is was so hard to maintain a relationship. Of course Luke had no answers. Lorelai decided that there were going to be Dr. Phil books in their future.
We then see Luke in Andrew's bookstore, surreptitiously buying some books and tapes. He doesn't want Andrew to see the titles of his purchases so he throws him $100 and runs out of the store. We find out that they are self-help books for those looking for love. At his apartment, Luke listens to the tapes and with some skepticism begins the self-help workbook.
Last minute preparations are going on at the Inn. Sookie informs Lorelai that the zucchini crop was at risk but Lorelai insists that her famous zucchini soup should remain on the menu for the opening. Sookie and Lorelai overhear Lindsay and Dean arguing in the other room.
As Luke is listens to the tape in his truck, his negative responses to the tape give us some indication that he still isn't enjoying the process. Luke parks the truck and listens until Liz runs up and knocks on the truck window. Liz excitedly tells Luke that she and T.J. are getting married in a renaissance ceremony in the town square. As always, Luke provides Liz with the support and care she has come to expect from her big brother. Luke discovers that Jess isn't coming to his mother's wedding so he decides to go to New York to talk to him. When Luke sees Jess, he attempts to shame him into coming to Stars Hollow for the big event.
Once again Luke is listening to the self-help tapes in his apartment. The speaker on the tape is asking him to consider with whom he would like to spend those special moments in life. Luke considers the question and has a light bulb moment.
While working in Lorelai's house on last minute preparations for the opening of the Dragonfly, Lorelai discovers that because Jackson was worried about the zucchini he is sleeping in the zucchini patch. Lorelai, Sookie and Michel run to rescue Jackson. When they find him, they decide that they have been stressing too much and need to cut out some of the more extraneous activities. They are so relaxed and comfortable they fall asleep in the zucchini patch.
The next morning, Luke drops by Lorelai's house and asks Lorelai to go to Liz's wedding with him. She accepts
