Toe Sucking
AIRED:
Joan Clayton, a successful attorney, prepares to celebrate her 29th birthday (although she claims to be 26 to make her achievements seem more impressive). Toni, Joan's best friend, begins dating Charles, a venture capitalist with a propensity for toe-sucking who dated Joan until he freaked out at the prospect of marriage. Toni tries to hide the truth, but their friend Lynn forces her to confess to Joan. Joan claims she has no problem with Toni bringing Charles to her birthday party; but then brings her friend and colleague, William, to try to make him jealous. Joan is furious to learn that Charles is now interested in settling down, and the evening comes to a screeching halt. Meanwhile, Toni constantly clashes with Maya, Joan's sassy assistant.moreless

  • This episode shows us what GF was all about-a little sass, a lot of comedy.

It's Joan's birthday, and she wants to celebrate with her friends-as she always does. But this year, the guests at her own festivities are a little different, her ex is back. Charles. Better known as 'toe-sucking' Charles. And not only is he at Joan's birthday party, he's there with Joan's BF Toni. After some very uncomfortable, yet hilarious, quips between Joan and Charles, Joan and Toni and Toni and Maya (regarding Maya's 'lack of class-Toni: I know your low rent self isn't talkin' about nobody!), Toni and Charles leave the party. Not before Joan humiliates herself by popping her dress straps in front of them and flashing her chest. Toni later has a change of heart, and returns to find Charles groveling to Joan at her house. They make up and kick Charles out. This show was classic-because it was hilarious, one, and two-the bond of the girls was just beginning to show.moreless
  • Joan and the gals make dinner arrangements and Toni asks Joan if it is alright if she is dating her ex, toe sucking Charles. Joan lies and says it\'s fine, when really to her it\'s not. The evening is fine until Toni and Charles make Joan a little uncomfymoreless

I\'ve seen this episode many times and never realized it was the pilot. I liked this episode not because of Toni and Joan, but because of Lynn and Mya. They both give Toni a hard time about her dating Joan\'s ex, with Lynn even pinning Toni down on her bed and threatening to cut her hair off if she does not tell Joan the truth about who she is bringing to dinner. And Mya, well she just has the attitude I love!moreless
  • Joan lies about her age

    5.0
I didn’t really like this episode because it was sort of stupid. For one thing, they weren’t really girlfriends. They should have started off with them being friends and reminiscing about how they got where they were. Tony was such a b****, and Mya was ghetto. Tony made you hate her and Joan was annoying. The only person that was likable was Lynn and they made her seem like a child. I didn’t like how they made her seem like some vulnerable child. Although you learn to love this about each one, it could have been brought on better. These are characteristics that they share and you learn to love these things about the people. All in all it was still a good episode and well written. If I hadn’t known and come to like the characters before I saw the pilot, I would not be watching this show.moreless
