Girls took a trip this episode as Hannah learns that her grandmother is going to die very soon. She goes to visit and we get to see the eccentric other members of her family (mainly her aunts). Complicating the picture is how thoroughly fleshed out the aunts' problems with one another is from fighting over which mother's daughter should have the engagement ring to who should get her house. Hannah's mother even asks her to tell Grandma Flo that she is marrying Adam (who doesn't seem too keen on the idea when she floats the idea). The most unbearable part of the episode was Hannah's condescending cousin Rebecca (medical student) who may be my least favorite one-off character in the series history. Not only is she viciously condescending to Hannah for no particular reason "you seem like the kind of person who would want to go to a bar" to texting while driving (how stupid can you be?) Which leads Adam to have to the hospital after having only been texted "car crash" by Hannah. She should really text more than that to someone who cares about her, perhaps some details or just tagging on "I'm fine" would suffice. But amidst all the turmoil and the family strife the aunts actually seem to reconcile after Grandma Flo seems to overcome her pneumonia after eating a cheese sandwich and Adam lies and tells her that Hannah and he are engaged. But she dies unexpectedly and Hannah has to get back on the train to say goodbye after just having left the hospital thinking it was all going to be just fine. Quite a real dose of misfortune on that part but often when people seem to be doing better they end up biting the dust (see every other episode of House). A decent detour episode and it's good to see that the writers are committed to exploring how Adam's Broadway role will affect his and Hannah's relationship. No Marnie, Shosh, or Jessa this week, oh well.moreless
