  • Actually laughed a little.

Okay so the first episode was just laying down the boring basics. The characters, plot line types etc.. This one felt like the storyline was actually moving forward. We establish that Hannah and Adam's relationship is just physical. We get to know Soshanna a little better with her reaction to her fake pregnancy, and we find out Soshanna is a virgin.

It's getting better. The dialogue feels more natural. The actors are getting comfortable with their characters. Still not as funny as it should be, but it seems to be heading in the right direction, slowly but still.moreless
  • Abortion and AIDS (Spoilers Ahead)

Hannah doesn't know how to react when Adam (her sort of boyfriend) continues to objectify her as a whore in the bedroom and she begins to get a fixation on whether she's as sexually safe as she could be even though she makes sure that she always uses condoms with her partners. This comes off of Jessa's scheduled abortion, and her ambivalence is understood and she says that she'll make a great mother but I gotta say her lifestyle right now, not sufficient parenting material in any dimension or alternate reality. Marnie continues her conflict of her overly perfect boyfriend and I think Hannah's right in assuming that she's just bored since they've been together for four years. Jessa decides to not show up to her abortion and hooks up with a random and it turns out she's bleeding (you know where) which means that she was just late not just actually pregnant. The real focus of this episode is Hannah and her awkward Larry David-esque tactlessness that costs her a job offer at a trade journal after she really hit it off with the interviewer. But seriously, why make a date rape joke with a guy who's just about to hire you? And the real kicker is in the end of the episode where she muses in front of her doctor that she really wants AIDS as an excuse to not have to do anything other than survive. The doctor is appalled but doesn't say anything. I think Lena Dunham is perfect and her writing really plays to her strengths as someone who doesn't know what not to say in certain situations. But the fact that Girls manages to maintain a reality with its characters (I have come across certain people like Hannah in everyday life) sell it as a true coming of age story as young adults learn to be just as lost and confused as real adults.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (0)

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Marnie: I'm sorry about [Charlie]. He' so busy, like, respecting me, you know, that he looks right past me and everything that I need from him.
Hannah: Okay you are a 23-year old girl who's had the same boyfriend for the past 4 years, so you're also allowed to be bored.

    • Marnie: I was just thinking, I've been sexually irresponsible enough in my life thus far that I should have gotten pregnant by now and I never have. Like, I get my period at the same time, on the same day, of every monthly cycle, my entire life, like it's never strayed from that.
Hannah: Then you're really lucky. I never know when I'm going to get my period, and it's always a surprise, and that's why all my underwear are covered in weird stains.

    • Hannah: How could [Jessa] ruin the beautiful abortion that you threw?
Marnie: Hannah! That's not what I meant.
Hannah: You're a really good friend, and you threw a really good abortion.
      Marnie: Oh stop it.
      Shoshanna: You did.

    • Hannah: I have a very bad fear of AIDS.
Gynecologist: Have you known someone with AIDS?
Hannah: It's more of a Forrest Gump based fear. That's what Robin Wright Penn's character died of.
