This week, Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) has the glee kids split off into pairs in order to learn emotion expression through ballads. Things get uncomfortable when Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) picks his name out of the hat and chooses "Endless Love" for their duet. During their duet, Rachel starts to realize how cute Will is and Will begins to worry because he recognizes the look on her face. Meanwhile, Quinn Fabray's (Dianna Agron) Chastity Ball dress is too tight. Her mother, Judy concludes that her weight gain is due to her quitting the Cheerios.
Rachel gives Will a gift – a tie with gold stars on it – so that he'll think of her. Will goes to discuss the issue with Emma (Jayma Mays) and tells her that this is similar to a former student, Suzy Pepper (Sarah Drew). She had also given him a tie to remember her by. When Will confronted her, she ate a hot pepper that put her into a coma. Will is afraid that something similar may happen with Rachel. Emma says he should sing his feelings to her in his ballad.
With his own problems in his head, Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) can't perform with Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), who actually has a secret crush on Finn. Kurt says that Finn should sing out his frustrations in their song. Later that night, Finn's mother catches him singing to the sonogram of the baby and he gives and tells his mother about Quinn's pregnancy. The next morning, Quinn finds out that Finn has told his mother and they argue about the issue. Kurt comes to Finn's help. He hints that Finn's issues have to do with girls and that perhaps Finn should give up women all together.
Emma goes with Will to rehearsal with Rachel. Will sings a mash-up about schoolgirl crushes on teachers, but Rachel doesn't get the message. Emma is just as smitten by Will's performance as Rachel, which doesn't help the situation. Will comes home from school to find Rachel talking to Teri (Jessalyn Gilsig). Teri is trying to exploit Rachel's crush on Will to get her to do housework at the Schuester residence. The next day, Suzy Pepper shows up and threatens Rachel to stay away from Will.
Puck (Mark Salling) confesses to Mercedes (Amber Riley), his ballad partner, that he's the father of Quinn's baby, not Finn. Mercedes advises him to back off since Quinn chose Finn. That night, Finn is over at the Fabray house for dinner and he begins to panic. He goes to the bathroom to call Kurt for moral support. He gets it together and sings his ballad, "You're Having My Baby" to Quinn right in front her parents, who are shocked to hear the news. Quinn accuses her mother of pretending she didn't know about the pregnancy. Quinn's father won't forgive her and kicks her out of the house. Finn brings her home and his mother lets her stay as long as she needs.
Suzy Pepper tells Rachel that she won't be able to find her self-esteem in Will. Will has a discussion with Rachel about her inappropriate actions and behavior. Rachel apologizes and Will reassures her that one day, she'll find a boy that loves her. The glee kids surprise Finn and Quinn with a group ballad dedicated to them.
