The performance of "Some Nights" is Finn's first as the leader of the New Directions and is a call-back to the first performance he inspired in the pilot, "Don't Stop Believing". The glee club members were all wearing dark jeans and all different styles of shirts but that are all the same shade of red and the choreography was a similar, simple style with glee club members just walking in and out of the front spots, all of which is the same as "Don't Stop Believing" was in the pilot.

The Glee title card that was used after the first scene was different then it normally looks. It was black and white, and was shown to be the picture shinning from a spotlight. This is a reference to DC's Batman comics.
Blain's Black and Blue Nightbird costume, is a reference to DC Comics Nightwing. He is the original Robin who grows up to become Nightwing. The is why Blain also calls himself "The NocturnalDefender"
