Goof: In the scene where Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith) are kissing when Finn has the flashback when he hit the letter carrier, the car has no rear view mirror. There is an attachment for it on the windshield, but no mirror.
Both in the pilot and this episode, Puck (Mark Salling) is seen throwing a drink in Rachel's (Lea Michele) face and Kurt ( Chris Colfer) into the dumpster. Additionally, both episodes have shots of Will (Matthew Morrison) driving his car with the broken exhaust pipe and a close-up on his license plate (only now, his license plate has changed from "RP8 9624" to "glee").
The brochures that Emma (Jayma Mays) keeps in her office are titled "Ouch! That Stings!", "Divorce: Why Your Parents Stopped Loving You", "I Can't Stop Touching Myself", "Radon: The Silent Killer", "My Mom's Bipolar and She Won't Stop Yelling", "Wow! There's a Hair Down There", and "So You Like Throwing Up: Understanding and Overcoming Bulimia".
Rachel: Can I use the auditorium later to practice? Our neighbors are filing a law suit.
Will: Sure.
(Speaking to the group about to toss him into the dumpster)
Kurt: One day, you will all work for me.
Puck: Those skirts are crunchy toast! Santana Lopez bent over in hers the other day, and I swear I could see her ovaries.
Terri: I don't want my baby to grow an extra arm just because I live in squalor and I'm so stressed.
Rachel: You think I'm good?
Finn: Well, when I first joined, I thought you were kind of insane. You talk a lot more than you should, and to be honest with you, I looked under the bed and made sure that you weren't hanging out under there. But then I heard you sing. I don't know how to say this, but you touched something in me. Right here. (Puts hand to chest)
Rachel: Your heart's on the other side of your chest.
Ken: (Sets two tickets in front of Emma) They're for Tulip-A-Looza. It's a tulip festival down at the Columbus Convention Center. It's supposed to smell pretty nice.
Emma: That's really sweet of you Ken, but I have a-a-a-asthma.
(Discussing assembly performance)
Rachel: They're not gonna kill us because we're gonna give them what they want.
Kurt: Blood?
Rachel: Better...sex.
Will: Let's make a deal. You're helping me with my problem, how about I take a stab at one of yours?
Emma: Oh no, I don't have a problem.
Will: You've been scrubbing that pencil sharpener for an hour.
Sue: Lady Justice wept today.
Terri: I'm not raising my baby in a used house. They're not clean.
Sue: So, here's the deal. You do with your depressing little group of kids what I did with my wealthy elderly mother. Euthanize it!
(Emma is worried that Rachel has been forcing herself to vomit.)
Rachel: I tried, but I guess I don't have a gag reflex.
Emma: One day when you're older, that'll turn out to be a gift.
Kurt: You need to call me before you dress yourself.
Mercedes: Whatever.
Kurt: You look like a technicolored zebra and it looks like I'm a part of it and that I planned it.
MercedesYou're a hater. You're trying to copy me. You know what? If your hair were any longer, you'd have curls.
Rachel: The only way to deal with teen sexuality is to be prepared, that's what contraception is for.
Quinn: Don't you dare use the "C" word.
Rachel: You wanna know a dirty little secret none of them want you to know? Girls want sex just as much as guys do.
Jacob: Is that accurate?
(Taking with the other cheerleaders at celibacy club about their uniforms)
Quinn: God bless the perv that invented these, remember the power motto girls, (the rest of the girls in celibacy club join in) It's all the teasing and not about the pleasing!
Sue: Gay parents encourage rebellion. There are studies on this.
Will: My father always said you'd become a man when you bought your first house. I'm not sure what he meant though because he burned ours down during a drunken fight with mom.
Mercedes:(During "Le Freak") Woah, woah. Hell to the no! First of all, you try to bust my face again and I will cut you. And also, this song is terrible!
Sue: Iron tablet, it keeps your strength up while you're menstruating
Will: I don't menstruate.
Sue: Yeah, neither do I.
Sue: We're gonna bring this club down!
Quinn: And I'm gonna get my boyfriend back!
Sue: I don't care so much about that.
(About New Directions' rendition of "Push It")
Sue: That was the most offensive thing I've seen in twenty years of teaching, and that includes an elementary school production of Hair.
Finn: I want to do glee. I'm really happy when I perform.
Quinn: People think you're gay now, Finn. And you know what that makes me? Your big, gay beard!

This episode marks the debut of recurring character Jacob Ben Israel. The biblical Jacob was the third patriarch of the Jewish people and direct ancestor of the Twelve Tribes; before the birth of his 12th son, Benjamin (also connected to our character's name), an angel renamed Jacob to Israel, the name after which the modern nation of Israel is named. So essentially, his parents named him Jacob Ben Jacob.

The title Showmance refers to a romance that develops between two performers in a show, which usually runs its course once the show is over. Will from the reality show Big Brother claims to have coined this term and even tried to copyright it.
Will: John Travolta hands!
Will is referring to the legendary pose Travolta made for the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever.
Terri: It's my very own Sophie's Choice.
Terri is either referring to the 1979 novel or the 1982 film of the same name or both. The term "Sophie's choice" has come to refer to a choice between two options both with negative consequences.
Rachel: What's a "luftballon"?
One of the family-friendly songs picked out for the glee club to sing was "99 Luftballons", a German-language (later rerecorded in English as "99 Red Balloons") Cold War-era protest song by singer Nena.
Sue: That was the most offensive thing I've seen in twenty years of teaching, and that includes an elementary school production of Hair.
Hair is a 1967 rock musical known for its controversy including profanity, drug references, and full-frontal nudity. No wonder Sue would be offended by an elementary school putting it on.
Mercedes: I'm so sick of hearing you squawk, Eva Peron.
Eva Peron was the First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952 and the inspiration for the musical Evita.
Sue: I'm not sure there's anyone else who's going to swim over to your island of misfit toys.
Sue refers to the glee club as the Island of Misfit Toys. This is a reference to the island that Rudolph, Hermie, and Yukon Cornelius sail to in the popular 1964 animated Christmas television special, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Quinn: Time for some girl-talk, Manhands.
"Manhands" is one of the many terms made popular by the comedy series Seinfeld.
