This television series is a remake of a 1944 film of the same name. Father O'Malley is sent to a parish in lower-class New York City to assist an older pastor, Father Fitzgibbon. Father O'Malley, must ingratiate himself with both the old pastor and the congregation. There are various ups and downs in their relationships but on the whole, it all seems to be going well. One night, the church burns to the ground.
