I've noticed that Sergeant Carter was more serious and more mature when Gomer and the rest of the platoon were in boot camp, but after they graduated, Carter became more comical, and was the source of much of the humor. My mother, rest her soul, was crazy about him because he was so funny, but he didn't come off that way in the B&W episodes. In The Andy Griffith Show, it was the other way around (go to that page where I'll start a forum on that).

Does anyone know if this show is showing reruns anywhere? I watched it a couple years ago, but I would like to see it again.

I'm not aware of it being shown anywhere in reruns at the moment, but the first few seasons are available on DVD.

It should have gone on beyond 1969. In its five seasons on the air it never finished out of the top ten in the Nielsens' and finished out of the top five only once.

I do agree with that assumption. Sergeant Carter did become a bigger part of the comedy as the show went on. Him and Gomer are ALWAYS hilarious though.

Carter did become more of a clown as the series progressed.

As a child at that time I did not like the mean Sergeant Carter. The yelling was not as bad as long as he was funny. Lots of shows had yellers who were funny. I wonder if the parents complained which lead to the change?
