  • Another bet between Hacker and Carter...

Sgt. Carter and Sgt. Hacker, the NCO in charge of the mess hall (played by veteran character acter Allan Melvin) get into another one of their arguments over who has the harder job. Carter ends up putting Hacker on the spot as he challenges him to have Pyle fix a meal for the troops. Hacker reluctantly agrees, as he and Carter have a bet going on whether Pyle will succeed or screw up. Pyle can't make heads or tails for the recipe for the scheduled fare (salmon croquettes) so he reverts to his roots- fixing good old-fashioned southern fare. including black-eyed peas and cherry cobbler. Meanwhile, Col. Gray informs Hacker that an important colonel will be visiting the base and he is the type who enjoys eating in the mess hall with the enlisted men. Gray has no knowledge that Pyle has been put in charge for the day and figures Hacker will do a good job with the salmon croquettes. Hacker finds out what Pyle did and tells Carter and also informs him about the visiting colonel. Hacker and Carter are freaking out thinking they'll get into big trouble if the visiting colonel hates the meal and Gray finds out what they did. After eating, the colonel states that he wishes to meet the person who prepared the food. Upon meeting Pyle, he states that it has been a long time since he enjoyed such good Southern fare- not since he a boy growing up in Georgia. Gray is perplexed as to why the meal was changed and Pyle informs him that he couldn't figures out the salmon croquettes recipe so he went with what he knew how to fix. The reactions of Carter and hacker are funny as the visiting colonel praises Pyle. Carter and Hacker are fun to watch together- they are always arguing and making bets against each other. However there is no doubt in my mind that they would stick up for or help the other if the chips were down.
