Error: Alton Brown says extrusion dies for pasta were coated with Teflon because it's "superhard." Teflon coatings are slippery but not hard, which is why you're not supposed to use metal utensils on Teflon cookware.
This episode is included in the Italian Eats (Volume 4) DVD.
Johnny Appleseed John "Johnny Appleseed" Chapman was an early American conservationist who planted apple trees throughout Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Legends depict him as a wanderer who seeded trees randomly; the truth is a little different but some legends have staying power. Alton compares Marco Polo's putative distribution of pasta throughout the world to Chapman's legend.
