Episode Recap

Dave and Larry are all set to take a week's vacation when Mr. Hutton tells them that Big Jack Jackson, who was to fill in for them, has fallen off the wagon. Not only do the not get to go on vacation; they also have to fill in for Big Jack in the evening in addition to doing their own show each morning. They go along with the plan when Mr. Hutton promises them double pay and an extra day of vacation for every day they fill in for Big Jack.

Dave doesn't mind the extra work, but the hour-long commute each way from his house will cut down on his sleep. Larry offers to let Dave stay with him, since his apartment is only five minutes away from the station, but Dave doesn't want to be separated from Linda.

Dave comes home to a house in disarray. Arrangements had been made to have the interior professionally painted while they were on vacation, and it was too late to stop the painters. Dave tries to take a nap before heading back to work, but there are too many distractions and he heads back to the station.

Near the end of their later shift the boys announce that there is a traffic jam on the freeway that Dave would be taking to go home. Linda hears the announcement, along with Dave's yawns, and calls to tell him to stay with Larry overnight.

Dave and Larry arrive at Larry's apartment, and Dave looks forward to six uninterrupted hours of sleep. Unfortunately Larry's not ready for bed yet. He plays music, runs the blender and talks loudly on the phone. When visitors drop by Dave has had enough. He puts his coat on over Larry's borrowed pajamas and heads out the door.

The next morning Larry begins the show alone. Dave is nowhere to be seen. Mr. Hutton questions Larry, but he has no idea what has happened to his partner. Linda calls and gives them the news: Dave is in jail.

Mr. Hutton and Linda meet Dave at the police station and listen in while Dave tells his story to the police. He had started walking back to the station, but stopped at a motel and took a room. A party in the next room woke him up, and then a man knocked on his door asking for Sheila. Dave sends the man next door then calls the front desk to complain. Soon another knock on the door wakes him up. This time it's the police, questioning him about the man who had knocked on Dave's door, who is now lying unconscious in the next room.

The man is not seriously injured, and everything is soon worked out and the police release Dave. However, he can't go home and get some sleep. Mr. Hutton expects him to finish his shift.
