That, and he didn't like how J.J. got all the attention in the scripts. John Amos wanted to have a comedic side to his character also, but instead, James was too serious all the time. John Amos wanted more depth to his character to expand his skills as an actor.

I was wondering why he left. He should have stayed. Even though his character was too serious, the show was still hilarious. Plus, he gets paid.

I agree with U 100 per cent Plus Amos got it right because he was able to star in other shows and movies. It is an unfortunate fact that when an actor/actress are ONLY indentified by one show they get typecast.

John Amos left because how the writers made J.J. the same stereotypical black teenager who was too cartoon like. It was a shame how John Amos was not recognize for being the prototype for HeathCliff Huxtable cause he paved the way for Bill Cosby.
