This is an outstanding episode. John Amos plumbs the emotional depths of his character as he relives the pain of having his father abandon him. It's nice to see him vulnerable and pained since we're so accustomed to him being the rock for his family. It also adds more dimension to James because now we understand why he is so committed to his family - he would never want them to experience the pain his father caused him. His dad seems clueless. He doesn't seem to understand why abandoning his family was not a good idea.
