Goodbye Cruel World is a 1992 British drama miniseries broadcast in three parts. It features the character of Barbara Grade (Sue Johnston), who is diagnosed with a terminal degenerative illness. The show explores the ways Barbara and her family come to terms with her illness and how they cope as her condition deteriorates. The drama takes a realistic perspective on how ordinary people manage when their happy lives turn towards misery and unhappiness. The series also features Alun Armstrong as Barbara's husband, Roy, Brenda Bruce, Jonny Lee Miller, Oliver Ford Davies, and Will Knightley. The series was written by playwright Tony Marchant, who is known for tackling difficult topics and writing stark contemporary dramas where characters face difficult dilemmas without happy endings. Directed by Adrian Shergold, it won several awards, including Prix Europa's 1992 Television Programme of the Year, and was nominated in 1993 by the British Academy Television Awards for Best Drama.
