Episode Summary

Blair and Serena spent their summer living it up in the belly of the beast: Paris, France. But where there's Paris there's bound to be boutique, Balenciaga, and of course, boy trouble. Unaware of Chuck's shooting in Prague, Blair struggles to forget him; things take a turn, however, when Chuck mysteriously shows up in Paris with a foreign stunning blonde at his arm. Meanwhile Serena contemplates which of her long-time beaus could be the one for her: Dan or Nate? Even on the Upper East Side drama erupts as Dan figures out the baby mama drama with Georgina, and Nate realizes something about himself when he meets fellow Columbia student, the intriguing Juliet.moreless

  • Oh Paris!

Absolutely loved it. Perhaps I was sucked in by Paris, but this episode is fabulous. The clothes, the locations and the story starts the new season with a bang. Combined with the next episode they are two of my favourite episodes. I do think that some people may be or have expected more due to the promos and the cliff hanger of series 3. However, why would they explain everything in episode one! If that was the case, why bother with the rest of the series. The clothes in this episode still look fabulous 6 months later. Love it. Fits perfectly with the storyline and the locations.moreless
  • Gossip Girl used to be pure fun. now they're trying to make it more dramatic, but I'm not sure if it works.

I like Gossip Girl. It's my guilty pleasure. It used to be pure fun. now they're trying to make it more dramatic, but I'm not sure if it works. - The Blair/Serina fight was intresting, surprisingly. - Georgina Sparks - The actress is good, but I think we're all tired of this character. how many times will she come back with another story?

    - Venessa's character is annoying, as usual. kind of tired of her too. - Chuck's storyline sounds intresting. but it also has a pretty huge potential to become too predictable. - Juliete's storyline. It also has a good chance to become intresting, I hope they will do it right.

but anyway, I gave this episode 5 because it wasn't really intresting, and not as good as a season premiere should be. hope it gets better..moreless
  • The same old thing only in another country, and people so dumb you wonder how they even made it this far in life. Let me explain...

Serena: Is once again trying to "find" herself in Paris, by flirting her way threw France and avoiding reality at home, which btw everyone in this show seems to be in their own world that they are always the victim. She decides to once again instead of going and finding a real life she is going to stay home and go to Columbia with Nate and Blair because it is easier and just expects everyone to understand and be happy for her. She always is the victim in her eyes, if she does something it was to help someone or because she thought it was the right thing, if someone else does the same thing to her then they are insensitive, don't understand and no longer her friend until she digs herself in a hole so deep she needs them again and in that case everything is alright.

Blair: can't turn her world into a fairytale so she shops and points out all of Serena's flaws. She gets the chance with a nice guy and the first thing she does starts comparing herself to Serena causing her to do something stupid and turn it all to hell. she's not friends with Serena/Serena is her best friend no/yes/no/yes how do they expect people to believe that they have been like this sense they were little and still be BFF's. Blair had no self confidence in the beginning of the show and slowly, at least I thought, she was beginning to grow and become a decent person, but then that all went away when something went south with Serena and trying to be "Queen Bee", then she became petty, shallow and lost her self confidence all over again.

Nate: is one of the only believable characters on this show if only he could learn to stay clear of Serena then his life could almost be good compared to how it is going at least. Partying like Chuck is all and good for a short time but we all liked him because he was the good guy and did what he thought was right. He is one of the few level headed characters on this show and they keep trying to destroy that and making him as stupid and petty as the rest of the cast.

Chuck: we only saw him for a short time in the end but it looks like he is trying to see what it would be like to be a normal human being and if all goes well, the writers will screw that up and he will have never learned a thing from his brush with death and run off to New York to make his way back through the population of women there, instead of staying a decent person that he is trying to be with his new lady friend.

    And lastly

Dan: two works - "paternity test" is it just me or do the people on this show really not believe that after everything that they have been through with Georgina Sparks that they really should believe a single thing that comes out over her mouth. she was not away long enough to have been knocked up by Dan and come back that pregnant. another thing, how exactly did she pull this off. in the finally she was as skinny as a board and came in at the end of it about to pop. also how did she "give birth" with out Dan not being there and where exactly did she get the baby? the first thing Dan should have done is called the police on this girl because she is not all there and the second she showed up he should have known it would have been trouble.

Anyway that's my rant on the first episode, they really need to pull it together with these people I don't understand how the ratings haven't fallen lately but hopefully it will get better.moreless
  • The New York Upper East Siders aren't teenagers anymore.

While I found this episode to be slow-moving, I couldn't ignore how mature it was. Everyone's grown up, and with the much-needed absence of Little J, it works.

So without a real drama, Dan and Vanessa seem to be pretty much over. And she handled the fact that her pending boyfriend had a baby very well. Georgina has set Dan up to sign the birth certificate in order to escape at the hands of some Russian. I don't see how Dan could possibly give up Milo (cute name) even if the boy turns out not to be his. I do hope Serena will play stepmom.

Blair was typical Blair, which was kind of annoying. Every episode she wants Serena to give up the limelight for her. And then she learns some convenient lesson and all is right with the world again. I have seen a clip where she spots Chuck in Paris and they confront each other, hopefully next episode.

I would not like Chuck to keep up this new identity crap. Although it may get repetitive, stick to the good stuff. I do love Paris, but I want New York all the way through. And poor Lily facing up to the harsh truth that her beloved stepson may be dead.

Finally, I got SO excited when I saw Katie Cassidy's name! I love her, she was great in Supernatural and everything else I've seen her in, but she can't be Gossip Girl. It's too early for the reveal. I can't say I've pictured Gossip Girl as anyone but the woman who does her voice - Kristin Bell. I think she should just make an appearance in the very last episode, closing her laptop and walking away. But honestly, she and Katie are too old to have been in high school with the gang.

So my verdict: more Blair and Chuck!moreless
  • Blair is stuck in Serena's shadow again, Nate has issues, Dan has issues, and Chuck is MIA.

I was excited for the season premiere, but within ten minutes, I remembered just how cliched and repetitive this show is. Extremely disappointed, but to be honest, not that surprised. Blair is still jealous of Serena, willing to throw her into a fountain for a guy, but it's still a "Let's-fight-to-death-but-then-make-up-and-be-best-friends-ten-minutes-later" scene. If you're watching this show for the first time, well, yes: these kids have unlimited amounts of money. Katie Cassidy's character as Juliet is interesting; she looks very much appearance-wise like Blair. The scene with her plus the appearance of Chuck was the only interesting parts of the episode; everything else was just another cliched plot. Of course, the two ending scenes are just typical Gossip Girl fashion: cliffhangers to keep viewers interested and make them believe a worthwhile episode, when really, they didn't. They just watched the exact same plots as they did for three seasons and saw two twists. Same old, same old. Now they just have to keep introducing new characters to keep the Gossip Girl world turning. Something that's been going on for, oh, about the second season.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • When Blair was looking at the painting in the museum, we were first treated with her back view and her hands are by the side. The prince was walking towards her. Her left hand was empty and right hand was holding her bag. However, when the camera changed angle and it showed her front view, her hands were in front with both hands holding the bag.

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Serena: Blair, I'm sorry. I know you wanna do your own thing. But Columbia isn't yours. My dad went to med school there. He encouraged me to apply. And I wanna go to college, but I don't wanna leave the city. I wanna be with my family and my friends. I-I wanna be with you.
Blair: Oh, lucky me! I love how it never has occurred to you that someone might not wanna see you every single day.
Serena: Someone, sure. Probably lots of people, but not my best friend.

    • Gossip Girl: Napoleon once said that secrets travel fast in Paris but Gossip Girl travels faster! Bisous Bisous

    • Lilly: You don't have to stay!
Rufus: And miss a room full of champagne and models? You forget I used to be a rock-star!

    • Vanessa(talking to Dan): We're talking about Georgina Sparks! Her hair lies! You can't trust one thing that comes out of her mouth ... let alone anywhere else!

    • Blair: So what if my fairy godmother is my credit card!

    • Serena: B, what are you doing? Cinderella did not google Prince Charming!
