Max & Laura are the winners of the contest. Austin and Derek are the biggest winners because they have gotten the much needed exposure to television and ingratiated themselves in the public, which is sure to majorly affect their careers without having to commit to a series of repetitious plays . The only losers are the judges and those putting on the Broadway play. They’re stuck with Max who is horribly cast, thanks in large part to their trying to be fair in assessing the contestants which influenced public voting. In real life, they would have selected Derek in a snap decision without worrying about his singing ability. Look at John Travolta, one of the worst singers of all time, cast as the lead in the movie musical. His weak vocals apparently didn’t stop him. Derek sings far better than Travolta, looks far better, and would have been a natural—had this been real life.
What makes the public vote for Max? The crying jag? As an actor you have to prostrate yourself before the public and show every flaw to make yourself as open as possible. Austin shouldn’t have had to show the fat child bit, but perhaps humiliation is the name of the game in the acting business.
Now the judges are stuck with an actor who is hardly going to bring the $$ in. I think the big lesson to be learned is—never do a tv series on allowing the public to cast the crew for a Broadway play again!
