  • A humble barber in a small and unsuccessful business begins to wonder about the shabby and exceedingly hairy stranger in his chair, and why he wants a considerable change in his appearance.moreless

In Hitchcock's first version of "The Man Who Knew Too Much", the hero was trapped by one of the villains in a dentist's chair; in this blackly comic episode, it is the occupant of a barber's chair who seems so frightening and domineering whilst the terrified Mr. Budd grows ever more certain that he is the master-criminal police are looking for. The claustrophobic setting and pitch-perfect acting from both Hugh Griffith (as the scary stranger) and Donal Donnelly (as the penniless barber) make the first half of the tale very entertaining; but, towards the end, the adaptation makes the mistake of leaving this tiny barbershop and moving out into the wide world, which rather dissipates the tension.moreless
