  • Does the severed paw of a monkey have the power to grant wishes? Yes, but be careful what you wish for, because you won't get it in the way you expect...moreless

The very famous W.W. Jacobs story, first published in 1902, has been faithfully adapted for this uneven, but sometimes excellent, series. The horrible manner in which the seemingly ordinary wishes of an elderly couple are granted has a quality of relentlessness which is, in a most disturbing way, mesmeric. The final sequence - when we never quite see who (or what) is knocking at the cottage door - may haunt your dreams. Cyril Cusack and Megs Jenkins are fine as the nice old couple, and their son is played by the very young-looking Michael Kitchen, almost 30 years before his fame as Superintendent Foyle. The episode also uses the creepy voice and piercing coal-black eyes of Patrick Magee to outstanding effect.moreless
