  • Pop icon and Police frontman departs from his usual musical fare to try classical lute.

First, I'm a huge Sting fan, so this is hardly objective. However, Sting's hallmark tenor admirably lends itself to the medieval "ballads" of Dowland. As usual, Sting immersed himself in his latest interest. This program shows him chatting knowledgeably with Dowland scholars about the composer's life and lyrics. He speaks of how a pop bassist learned to play the 16-string lute. Obviously, it's hardly an "artiste-tic" dabbling for him. I've always liked how Sting puts himself at risk to try new musical styles, and this is just about as daring as he's tried.

Interesting, too, was peeking inside Sting's beautiful English and Tuscan homes -- gawking at the gardens -- where the program was filmed. Many of the songs are performed on sprawling lawns in an MTV fashion. Classical music videos?! More than just background, the program allows you to watch rehearsals leading up to a performance in a lovely chapel.

If you enjoy Sting, watch this and keep an open ear and mind. You'll be rewarded.moreless
